They have a nice little collection of TT's etc as a result, not to mention the contribution to the summer ball they levy for good measure.... FTR I don't like it either |

Sign up for an account at www.trapster.com
Then go to this page: http://www.trapster.com/config-poi.php
Then go to the map. Double click on an area. Choose "Create Area", Step Size "Gigantic", "Make area Bigger".
Then make many circles, and overlap them.
Then download the POI's.
Then hook up your GPS to your laptop. Then configure POI's on your GPS to alert you for whatever one you want and how many metres ahead of time.
Then you're all set. I use 150 metres, and I use a sound, rather than the verbal warning.
I update every few months since there are new cameras here and there.
It is free. It is awesome. You can also report new cameras, or also vote that a camera is true or false.

Used the Trapster on my Blackberry before - no good (too slow and takes too much traffic).
I use different distances and difference sound warnings for speed (700m, usually highway) / redlight (150m, city) / combo-camera (300m, city).

I've found it a bit hit and miss, sometimes warning me after I have passed a camera, which is pretty useless, even after it has been on for a while so GPS is locked on OK. I have tried experimenting with different warning ranges - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
It is a pity as it is otherwise excellent when it is working correctly. I therefore tend to use POI-Lite which is a lot more basic but seems more accurate.

Just a 2012 update. Trapster has been successfully updated and upgraded. I use it on my iPhone which sits discreetly in the cupholder of my car. It may be illegal (though I am a firm believer in civil disobedience) but it is almost completely undetectable when used on a phone.
Just today on a trip to Bern, Trapster correctly identified 100% of the cameras along the way. With 14 million users, it's kind of a Wikipedia style with voting done by users to weed out the false alarms or to confirm a trap.
The other wonderful aspect is that it accurately displays your speed, as opposed to your speedo which is purposely overestimating your actual speed...meaning you can put your foot down a bit more and not pay a price.
Of course, all of this means I'll receive a ticket in the mail...but to be honest I keep the cruise control on 125km/hr (120 actual speed) and simply like to be aware of the big brother setups.

Is there a way Trapster to work in offline mode (without 3G internet?)

Even when 3G signal is dropped the app is slow to load the map, but continues to warn regarding traps, etc. So it is demanding on the network.

I've been playing with CamSam recently, which allows, but does not _require_ data connectivity for real-time updates (i.e. to report or get warnings of mobile cameras). Works fine offline too, but doesn't show on a map, nor display your own real speed. The warning is good though, with a green-orange-red bar display and an optional voice warning (500m, 300m and 100m, I think). Uses the SCDB database and is direction-specific too.

One downside of Trapster is that there is no indication of direction...yet. Maybe that will change in the future, but I pass a number of "wrong way" cameras. Still, I'd rather be cautious.

This app is a bloody godsend. If only to put my mind at ease for the times/locations I thought I was speeding, but was worrying about whether a camera saw me.
Lets hope they keep it up to date - the sneaky one in the first doorway on the first tunnel leaving Zurich on the Luzern motorway is not listed.
Edit: Caveat - naturally, I would never use this app while in CH, what with it being illegal and all. *cough*

I've only come across one speed camera on the way from Geneva to Lausanne that wasn't listed. Or if you've got a passenger, they can do it to make sure you keep your eyes on the road.

Is this for real? To 'see' cameras it is illegal??
Surely making you slow down is the aim?...but they don't want that?
Have a Garmin Nuvi btw but still interested.
It has taken me weeks to learn how to use one model.
Do the swiss police get checked out on all the gear?
I have had my first fine...+2 km/h after correction. Bugger! | | | | | |

You must do it at the same zoom level at which you will use it later in car. Also don't close the app, let it run otherwise the cache will be flushed and the data will be lost.
It works, I did it a few times to avoid losing the map when you are in tunnels or in areas with poor or no 3G network. Of course it will not show the freshly reported speed traps from other users but only the fixed traps that are approved and stored in trapster's database.

Thanks Argovia for the tip, I think I also found another way to use the trapster data.
You download the POI db onto your Garmin or TomTom and you will the reports http://trapster.com/config-poi.php
Questions is if the latest reports will be included, but still I think this is a very good and updated DB of CH for example. I'm using a old database on my Nokia from SCDB so the newest ones are not included.
It's good for driving in CH, but once you need to go abroad it's tricky with the 3g...
