As a very honest police sergeant back in the UK once commented to me, "There's no such thing as crime prevention; all you can do is make
yourself a less attractive target than other potential targets." Sad, but true.

Burglaries in Vaud/Geneva are domains of Georgians (p.s. 90% of ALL professional criminals in Russia "thieves in law" are Georgian).
There was a huge gang busted recently.

The worst kid of gangsta, as like many russians, they have no value for life so have no problem killing innocent bystanders.
[Sorry I have been quiet long enough, and dont like to make statements on ethnic groups, but one reaches a limit.]
Is the reason you're so desperate for CH citizenship despite desping this nice land cuz you're father is a gangsta booted out of Canada? (You're obviously not one.)

They used to control all the Ecstasy smuggling to North America.
Killing bystanders? Haven't heard about too many bystanders getting hurt in Canada, unless by biker gangs.

another place for juicy pickings is terryhall on the nighttrain - late night + alcohol = perfect victim.
Crime does happen here - it's just not reported so often in the news sources.
And right now is a prime time for your place to be turned over....as the days get shorter, the burglars get bolder.

| | | Re: Thieves on trains ... in Switzerland ! | Quote: | | | | | It's mostly Albanians or Gypsies who are into that. Some Kosovars tried to steal my G-parents lagguage at the Zurich airport trainstation. We cought them literally by the hand, but the airport personnel refused to get involved... probably because they looked just like the perps themselves. | | | | |
also watch out for Canadian attention-whores... they are typically clueless, but will wax eloquently about all sorts of subjects. best to ignore them, because anything subtle will likely miss them completely, but groaning at them in public is encouraged.

The best is never let your guard down, no matter how happy yodelly safe the surrounding seems. So I never leave my stuff unattended, never carry a wallet in my back pocket or carry an open purse. Maybe it is a chick thing, if I was a big dude I wouldn't be so careful, probably.
Prague is the worst, the pickpockets are so skilled BBC made a documentary about them a while ago. They cut things out of your back pockets with a razor blade without you knowing anything, they know how to slit your purse open while you wear in under your arm.
If you sleep, sit on your belongings or wear your jacket, buttoned, all pockets closed. When I carry my bass around pickpockets never bugg me, I guess they are afraid of being whacked | | The following 2 users would like to thank MusicChick for this useful post: | |

I think the best thing (as mentioned by a previous poster) is to keep your guard up. I fell asleep and woke up only to find that someone had taken out all of my foreign currency out of my wallet. At the time I had pounds, dollars, euros, and swiss francs with me. On top of that, I was unsure if they had taken my credit card number since my card was out of the slot in which I normally place it. Therefore, I cancelled my credit card and got a new one also (just in case). It was a bit disheartening at the time because I could not understand why someone would want to steal from someone else. I still cannot figure out why, maybe because Im naive.

I was almost pickpocketed (from my backpack) in Bern.
Two guys walking in front of me, one talking loudly on the phone---but I noticed he wasn't having a real conversation--strange comments.
Then suddenly his buddy suddenly changes direction and leaves---with out a word or a goodbye or something.
Next thing I feel a slight tugging on my backpack (like somebuddy pulling a prank back in junior high days), and the dude is right behind me, and an old rail pass is half way pulled out a partially open zipper.
I gave him a pretty good earful, but I was quite in shock, shoulda followed up.
Crime is surprisingly low here, but common sense should always be followed.

I'm glad you didn't follow up. I caught a guy with his hand in my handbag, I just remember instinctively feeling something was wrong and slammed my relaxed elbow close to my body and bag.
The guy was extremely aggressive and in my face, as I'd yelled a bit too. The word that comes to mind is feral, his hateful face really scared me but luckily he took off.
I don't recommend being a hero, these people have a lot more to lose than replaceable material things.

This was in Peru though...Being a hero is not an option
