How I imported my car from the UK

So, having driven my 1995 Jeep Wrangler over to Switzerland from the UK in March, it was decided that we would like to keep it if possible.
Rightly or wrongly, I hadn't done any paperwork regarding the Jeep since moving here so my first step was:

1. I went to the local customs office in Luzern where I obtained an 18.44 form (Declaration of clearance for household effects) and form 13.20A (contains vehicle info & number for obtaining insurance).
Cost approx 25chf

2. I went to a local Main Dealer to get the Abgas-Wartungsdokument. (Emission test).
Cost 100chf
They also cleaned the car ready for the inspection.
Cost 170chf
They carried out a mock vehicle inspection to see what may need doing.
Cost 170chf
Wasting 6 weeks waiting for the arrival of an ordered Cert of Conformity to arrive from main Jeep dealer in Sihlbrugg when it didn't exist. (call direct its safer)
Cost Priceless

3. Changed the headlights
Cost 180chf

4. Took it to the Inspection today in Steinhausen and......................................... ................................

it Passed

Only have to move the Fog light to the other side. Woo Hoo
Cost for test Approx 170chf.

Total= 815ch

Not the horror story I was told it would be

Just got to sort the insurance and get my plates.

Glad its finally sorted

Just thought this might help

Great to hear you finally got your car through and thanks for posting the report - gives me hope that it might not be as painful to get my UK RHD scoobie converted when my time comes in the next few months...

I'm going to assume more than 815 CHF which means the process was worth it.

You paid CHF 50 too much. Locals only pay CHF 50. When I went to do my second abgas check I insisted on paying only CHF 50 and the price magically halved

You certainly got cheap headlights though.

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

Well, you got cheap headlights. Mine was the highest component of the whole import cost. But I have a turbo diesel and it still runs superbly and I love it lots so we decided to import it. It'll have no resale value so it'll be run to the ground before we get a new car

CHF5,900 less a bit for the RHD part (according to AutoScout24.ch). For the sake of CHF800, that seems worth it to me.

Had nothing to do with monetary value. It's my toy and I wanted to keep it simple as that.

Got my Swiss plates today and exchanged my UK licence for a Swiss one. I though an eye test was needed but apparently not

eye test is needed if you want 3.5 tonne on your licence, that also seems hit or miss, I said I didn't want it and crossed it out, then someone filled it in again as it was on my uk licence so I got sent for the test, same with my wifes licence, yet a mate went to the same centre, gave in the same form with the option crossed off and they accepted it and he didn't need the test.

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

I had the 7.5ton option on my UK licence and was told I would have to take a short medical to keep it or I will only get the 3.5t.
I opted to keep it.
I'll update what happens then

Yep: I had the medical for the 7.5 Ton option. It could come useful one day and not sure how difficult it would be to take the test in Switzerland.

I think I might take my HGV1 in the UK in spring as probably easier for me than in Switzerland.

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

Thanks, very useful. I'm going through the process myself. I'm just about to go for the vehicle inspection.

A quick question or two :

- is there anything about the car that I have to be careful of - for example I've heard of cars failing due to the GB sticker on the car? I've had a pre-inspection and I know the lights are ok, and I'm booked in for a thorough clean.

- I presume I still keep my GB plates on the car during the test until I get the Swiss ones? Do I get the Swiss plates as soon as I've passed?

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

Your question is not very precise, the only thing I was surprised with (apart from failing the inspection on brakes and differential leak) is the check for the accident warning triangle, or whatever it is called, that you are supposed to have in the car at all times. This is the only time it has been useful to me. Buy it at Coop Bau or Migros DIY

I have a Darwin badge on my Jeep and that was ignored.

If you pass you will get a bit of paperwork to take to reception and then (well I did) chose a reg number from a list and they will give you the plates. Make sure you have arranged the Insurance or you won't get the plates until you do.

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

Hi Kevlegs

Does that mean you didn't have a COC and you still got the car registered? I have just imported my Ducati and i have no way of getting a COC. I hear motorbikes don't need emission tests so it looks like it is a case of taking it to the test centre with my 13.20A form.

Did you drive the car to the test centre on british plates and insurance? I guess putting it on a trailer is a bit extreme. I don't have any old number plates i can put on the bike for the ride to the test centre.

Thanks for your help

Will

There was no COC issued for my vehicle but it wasn't an issue.
I had a years UK insurance set up for when I moved to Switzerland so was on UK plates until the test day. I the Swiss insurance ready to start on the test day.

Re: How I imported my car from the UK

Thanks for the thread - very useful.

I was considering importing my 2004 VW Polo from England, but it's got such low mileage and a decent resale value (~£4.5K) that I'm not sure whether to bother.

My understanding from other threads on here is that it really isn't worth bringing a right-hand drived car over unless you intend to keep it until the end of it's life, because of the costs of conversion + difficulty in selling it - unless you take it back to England.

Is that right? Has anyone brought a right-hand drived car here, converted it and then sold it on (either here of back in England)?
