Lots of countries out there are still under a monarchy. Sorry but I dont see the corelation between wealth and coming from one. Anyways, back to the topic of overpriced metal plates..

Because each canton's vehicle licensing office is able to sell any plate they so desire. This usually means low numbers or combinations that may appear to be attractive to buyers.

In China simplest way for your car never to be stolen (by locals of course) is having plate like 4444 !

He's not advertising the plate, he just posted the fact that Basel Land was auctioning off a plate which had reached 7400.-chf so far.

They sell unattractive ones as well - perhaps because the original owner does not need a car any more. I think the number just goes back in the pool.

The salesman who sold us our car and arrange the plates was most eager to tell us that we had got allocated a fairly low (relatively) ZH number for our car.

That deserved a nonchalant - "do we look like we care?" look.

And the highest paid price (in the last 2 months) was for ZH 1007 which pulled in a staggering 73,100.-chf...!!!
They must have lots of 1007.

It's OK, I'll get it myself.

It's not an investment because you don't own the right to resell it.
Once again it depends on the canton. E.g. in Graubünden the plates are freely transferable which means that you can sell them yourself.

Thanks for pointing that out, I did a check of Graubünden's department of motor vehicles website and sure enough you're spot on.

I live in Davos and my friend and I were wandering around with our cameras last night (WEF madness galore) and walked by a Mercedes with a GR 1 license plate. Is it really a status thing? All I know is that it probably cost a lot of money! I can't find any info. about it on the internet, and I'm curious. I guess I could just ask a Swiss person! =) (Yes, I took a photo of it!)

Yes, it is. For some people at least.

GR 1 is a government vehicle though.

I saw GR 3 in Bahnhofstrasse last year on a Maybach. When I got home, I looked up, who the owner was, and googled him. It was the owner of Dolder.

Doc.

Plenty of money made in the UK with fancy number plates- especially due to mixture of letters and numbers, making initials, and even names. One of our neighbours had a famous business, with his name on his yellow rolls
JES50P. At least in CH you keep your number plate for life.

As told to me by older Swiss it's because a low number establishes you as a veteran (Swiss) driver where as a high number means you're most likely a new driver or a foreigner.
And they have the nerve to call American's shallow and wasteful.

Well you know the old saying, a fool and his money are soon parted
