Number plate: "BL 8", 7400CHF and rising

Unfortunately, I am not the seller here.

For those of you in who would like to have the above number plate, it is currently up for auction at the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Landschaft.

The auction opened yesterday at 4000CHF and is currently at 7400CHF. It will run until the 29th of November. Let's see how far some people are prepared to go for a small piece of pressed metal.

That's nothing, ZH 3155 is presently at 10,400.-chf.

And the highest paid price (in the last 2 months) was for ZH 1007 which pulled in a staggering 73,100.-chf...!!!

There's some people in Switzerland that just have too much money..

As told to me by older Swiss it's because a low number establishes you as a veteran (Swiss) driver where as a high number means you're most likely a new driver or a foreigner.

i'm suprised the number 8 is valued so high here - it is in china/hong kong, as 8 in chinese means good fortune/wealth

Re: Number plate: "BL 8", 7400CHF and rising

We've had 4 digit plates in ZH going for above CHF 70K for many years. Seems to be that the lower numbers are released in the winter.

Now, I'm a kind of numerologist nutter, but paying extra money for a license plate? What if you move canton?

In numerology, the number eight has the following attributes
Positive: Materialism, strength, tenacious, a capacity for focused and sustained effort, reward for past efforts can be had during this time
Negative: Ruthless, no thought for others, guilt ridden, bad luck, and material loss

Perhaps a plate has better return on your money than say real estate? Think of it as an investment.

In NSW Australia, the original heritage plates (numerals only) in low denominations are worth a fortune, to the extent that single and double digit plates are rarely traded . #197 is currently up for sale, and starting price is 115'000chf.

Not anymore. Numbers get recycled...I have a lower ZH number than many of my native work colleagues.

Re: Number plate: "BL 8", 7400CHF and rising

My Swiss wife has told me it is one of those "quiet" Swiss status things, like the guilds. Before the auctions, to have a low number (4 or 5 digits), the plate must have been owned a long time, maybe passed through the family generation. Only the rich had cars back in the early days, even the 1950's, so it's a badge that says you come from an established, wealthy background.

Or she could be making that up

Bring on the full USA/Australian private/vanity/w@nker plates I say. More fun to laugh at peeps. A car that was getting around my Perth 'hood was "SCHATZLI", I kid you not. Or the pick-up for this furniture store that I saw a few months ago was "ZU HAUSE"

It's not an investment because you don't own the right to resell it. The plates belong to the canton and only the canton has the right to sell the plates of which they aren't actually doing because once you no longer need the plate it's returned to the canton who resell it again. So paying 4 and 5 figures for a plate you never own is insane.

Exactly. Even though the plates themselves are not old, or at least do not look old.

True, almost. Although you can't re-sell the plates you are able to transfer plates to immediate family members. Which, begs the thought, that if you're willing to pay CHF 100K for a number, then it's probably worth re-starting the breeding process to create future automobile owners in your family if you don't have anyone immediately elligible.

Re: Number plate: "BL 8", 7400CHF and rising

But will it reach 7 million quid though...? Its sick how some people have just too much money.

Number One Number Plate Sells For £7m

Small number but a very big price

It was auctioned for charity in the United Arab Emirates, beating the previous record of £3.5m for a plate featuring the number 5.

The successful bidder said he bought it because he "wants to be the best in the world". Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, added: "I bought it because it's the best number."

However, he would not say which of his many cars would carry the record-breaking single-digit plate. The oil-rich UAE began auctioning off so-called vanity licence plates last May. Proceeds from the auctions go to a rehabilitation centre for victims of traffic accidents.

On Saturday, 90 licence plates were auctioned off, raising a total of £12m.
The previous five such events raised more than £25m.
