Volvo S60 import from USA

Hi all,

First post here for me. Moving back to Switzerland after working in the US for a couple of years. I'm considering bringing my car with me.

Does anyone have any comments or experience in importing a US 2002 Volvo S60 to Switzerland? Did you have to do many changes on it to pass Swiss inspection?

We will move to either ZH or LU.

Many Thanks!!

Re: Volvo S60 import from USA

How many miles?

Shipping one in a container will cost you a few thousand chf, plus depending on the lights (xenon for example), some small modifications may be needed. Overall, you could be looking at placing 4-5k into it just to make it street legal, and if your speedo is in MPH, that too should ideally be modified making it even more complex if you wish to remove the dash and the like...

It might be worth it, but only just. In some instances selling it and buying second hand here might make better financial sense.

I just know that a few people who imported Mustang's from Canada, went through over 5k chf in changes and homologation fees, and a lot more with the taxes (which you won't pay as your car has been in your hands for a longer time, but I digress).

Re: Volvo S60 import from USA

I know this is a late response to this posting but I hope it might help someone.

Here is my story bringing 2006 VW Jetta to Switzerland from USA. I used Schumacher Cargo Logistics (www.sclusa.com) with port to port shipping. Delivered my car to port in Houston and they delivered it to me in Baselland in about 5 weeks. My totall cost for that was approximately $3100.

That was shipping... Once I got it in country, I connected with an insurace agent (AXA Winterthur..I can provide contact in Basel) to get a nachweis ( not sure about spelling) sent to MFK. To get this you will need the stamm nummer from the customs papers. Once That is done MFK gave me an appointment to test the car and I was allowed to drive it until the test date with my US plates.

At the MFK test only adjustment needed was headlight angle and local VW garage did that for me for CHF 20. Next bit of important information is the top speed of the car. If it is not in the manuals, find it from Google. Tires on the car must be adequate for the top speed specified by the manufacturer.

Now I am driving with BL plates
