Public Transport options for my simple route? - please help!

Dear friends,

Thank you in advance for looking at this post. I have searched some of the archives and am still not sure what a good solution is for me.

I am a student and will be living in Winterthur soon. I will need to take a bus to the Winterthur HB, and then a train into downtown Zurich, and then back again a few times a week. I would also like to ride the tram sometimes around Zurich area sometimes.

Can someone please recommend what ticket(s) I should buy? Do I need a 2 zone pass? Must I buy tickets from SBB and ZVV?

Please help!
Thank you so much
Daniel Kurganov

Try this:

http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/...bonnemente.htm

Also I suggest you go to the SBB travel office in Winterthur, they can work out the best option for you. Make sure that you consider a GA (you can pay monthly), especially if you are intending on traveling throughout Switzerland.

Cheers

Thank you for the reply. Zurich to Winterthur is considered "6 zones" so the year pass for that (i am under 25) is around 1500 CHF!
The "point to point" pass doesn't show any results for zurich-winterthur....
I really hope that 1500 CHF is not my solution...

If you are a student, then you can get a GA and pay monthly:
http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/...-abo-imabo.htm

That's less than 8 CHF per day.

With this you can travel all over Switzerland on buses, trains, some boats, some of the Postauto network and you get half price on some cable cars too.

Switzerland is expensive? What a surprise.

As the other posters suggested, go to the travel office to get precise prices worked out and information.

However, here is my 2 Rappen worth:

As Zürich and Winti are both within ZVV you cannot get strict train tickets. All tickets are automatically also valid within their zones for all public transport. Therefore a ticket from your local bus stop in Winti to your local tram stop in Zürich and including the train and everything in between will cost exactly the same (and in fact be exactly the same ticket in all respects) as the train ticket you would buy from Winterthur Hauptbahnhof to Zürich Hauptbahnhof. A lot of people misunderstand this and end up spending too much.

If you are only travelling occasionally, you could also consider getting 6-er pack tickets (can't remember the name, Mehrfahrtenkarte maybe?) which you stamp at the ticket machine and which is then valid for one trip or for a given period (for example 1 day, depending on the ticket type, that type is called Tageswahlkarte). You can stamp/use that ticket six times and this often comes cheaper than buying six equivalent tickets individually. You can also conmbine it with a Halbtax which should save you a lot of money if you use it frequently.

Another option is to get a monthly ticket for Zürich (remember to tell them you are a student as this can get you a reduction) and then get Anschlussbillette for the rare occasions you go to Winterthur. Anschlussbillette are also available in the 6-er format to stamp. An Anschlussbillet is basically an upgrade that tansforms your all Zürich ZVV pass to a Zürich and Winterthur pass for a limited period of time, and again comes cheaper than buying it as a separate ticket.
