Importing car from France - What about french documents before I get Swiss plates?

Hi all,

I'm importing my car in Switzerland from France as part of my personnal effects. I'm up to speed with custom clearance processes. However, I have a question on the French regulation side:
- I understand that I have 1 year to get Swiss plates once car imported
- I'll try to speed-up the process but it might take more than a month due to various stuffs.

My question is:
What should I do with french regulation which enforced changing your address on your car document (carte grise) and this within 1 month after you move. Otherwise you might get a fine of 750 euros...Also, the adress must be in France. I won't have adress in France anymore....

So, how to handle the transition period (once imported and before getting Swiss plates?) as I will have to drive in France too...I'm afraid to get tickets.

P.S:
There is no way to have complaisance adress in France, french authorities are stringent with this now (to make sure speeding tickets will be received...!).

Thanks!
R

I imported my car from France a couple of years ago, but I did not have the issue of driving in France.

I guess it would be ok if you present the request for changing the car plate with your new address in CH. You can only take out your names from the French records once you have the new car documents.

Re: Importing car from France - What about french documents before I get Swiss plates

Thanks Chiarina for your feedback.

I actually gave a call to the 'préfecture' in France and the person told me I have nothing to do and that french papers will be cancel automatically once Swiss authorities will give feedback. But she was unable to tell me what would happen with Police if they stop me and find out my adress is incorrect...

According to your feedback I understand the swiss plate application form would work. In the meantime and before I start to apply for new plates, do you think customs documents would work as well?

Thanks !

I think it should work, French police should be ok with any document proving you are moving out of France together with your car.

Hi Chiarina,

I'll be anyways 'de bonne foi' as they're will be nothing more to do according current processes from the 'prefecture' for this situation....

Thanks!
