| | | UK Car Disposal - How?
Hello,
I'd be grateful if anybody could please assist me with the above question.
I have a UK vehicle (SORN status Volvo S40 1999 4 dr saloon) sat in my garage and would like to either;
1) Sell the vehicle to say, anybody wishing to go back to the UK
2) Fully dispose of
I await any suggestions / interest.
Thanks.
Geraldine.
ps. picture attached.

Sell it here you wont get nothing, I brought mine over 2 years ago and sold it for scrap basically. Best bet would be to sell it to someone returning to the UK or take it back yourself and sell it over there.

ps. picture attached. | | | | | If it's on sorn, I take it also has no M.o.T in which case it would be illegal to drive here (as it would be illegal in the UK), so how would anyone drive it back to Blighty? It's probably a good car but fear it's bound for the scrappy.

there is a scrap yard just down the road from you in buchs that took a snotter of mine, but they charged us 150chf to take it.
the car looks in good nick, why not stick it on ebay or ricardo, or sell it for export? or advertise on the for sale section here?
be careful tho, when we advertised our uk car on here we got a lot people wanting to buy it and drive it illegally out here and all over europe, a hassle I could do without!!

| | | Re: UK Car Disposal - How? I had brought my old Ford galaxy from UK and after few month it broke down here in Geneva. I went to the scrap yard and they wanted 200CHF to take off my hand. I then went to my local Emil Frey dealership and the guy said there are some people who buy these UK cars and ship to Africa (right hand steering!). He bought it for 200CHF from me I am sure he made doubled his money but as far as I was concerned I was up 400. So go to some dealers. They know the right people and if you sale it to the dealer its their responsibility. Oh and make sure you inform UK road tax people that its off the road. Otherwise you may find a big bill when you eventually go back |

Hi
I took my beloved aged UK golf here in October http://www.truninger-ag.ch/
they were happy to speak English on the phone and when i got there, didn't pay me but didn't charge me, cared about the paperwork (keeper certificate) and were friendly about understanding it plus there's a train station just up the road.

I scrapped a UK car too 1 year ago, where MOT had just expired. I forgot the name of the company, but they advertised in either Blick am Abend or 20 minutes. I called them, they came at the agreed time, picked up the car with a "tow-truck", confirmed to have received it for scrapping and even handed me CHF 100 :-)
sent copy of confirmation to DLVA.
Doc.

If you can get it to the UK you can sell it online at www.webuyanycar.com You can at least get an estimate of the value in the UK online.

I like the honest options above.
I'd drive it over the border to France or Italy and accidentally leave the keys in |

the problem with that is its still the op's car, if anything happens (speeding fines, parking fines, involved in any crimes etc etc) then it comes back to the op.

ps. picture attached. | | | | | I may know someonme who is interested. Can you answer some questions first please? I am sure the car can be driven to the UK even without MOT or Tax as long as it is pre-arranged with the UK DVLA. (Need to check up though)
Is there any MOT left on the car?
What is the mileage and condition?
What size is the engine? (Petrol or diesel?)
When was the last service? (Will it make it to the UK?)
Is there anything wrong with the car?
Let me know and I will ask around.
Cheers,
Neil

No it can't, as per the gov's website, when taking your car abroad the mot and tax has to be valid for the whole time its away.
If its not legal to drive in the uk, then its not legal to drive anywhere, the rule is plain and simple.
while the chances of you being caught are slim, if you where to be involved in an accident then you'll be up poo creek without a paddle, and depending on who you listen to your insurance will also be invalidated.
Personally I wouldn't want to be stopped by the french police without all the doc's being in order, or to try to sneek passed all the anpr camera's at the ports in an untaxed, sorn car.

Technically you can drive to any MOT station in the UK if you have a pre-booked appointment and your car is still insured.
"Driving to an MOT test when a SORN is in place
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for that vehicle."
(DVLA)
It is possible to take out short term insurance for this purpose, but this may be dependent on MOT. To get Swiss export plates incl. insurance in Kt. ZH go here: http://www.stva.zh.ch/internet/ds/st...ld_export.html
For other Cantons go to www.asa.ch
Risk of something happening in France is still there of course.
Look for exporters, there are quite a few in Dübendorf, Brüttisellen, Dietlikon.

Reason: added insured export plates possibility

yes you can drive it to a pre-arrange test, but iirc there are extra conditions like it has to be the nearest centre and no more then 1 hour each way, so you can drive it 1 hour before the test (to get to it) and 1 hour back (should it fail). 600 miles to Dover is no no.
you could also try contacting one of the places that sells cars for export only, maybe they could pick it up on dealer plates?

You could also just hire a trailer and tow it back and sell it in the UK. I'm sure you'll find someone who would want another car towing back here to help with the costs.

There is nothing in the law stating you must test locally, the requirement is a pre-booked appointment before setting out.
Of course you may have some chatting to do to the police but that's why I recommend the Swiss temporary plates in my previous post and links as they come with insurance as they're designed for export.

what about getting insurance (somehow) and then driving to the UK and getting ANPR-ed. They'll crush the car for you | |
