Auto Insurance on imported car...

I've been working with Jenny from this forum and talking to a few co-workers about auto insurance here. It seems that once I sign for an insurance policy, it doesn't go into force until I take the car to the registration authority and get the grey Swiss registration card.

So how do I legally get the damn car home from Geneva? It cleared customs and the shipper wants it out of their warehouse.

US plates, BTW.

Re: Auto Insurance on imported car...

go to the reg place with all the paperwork you have. once there they will need insurance, so have them call 'jenny' thasts what I did with my agent....

Im assuming the car has passed everything?

you will get your plates and go to the shipper.

you could also trailer it home if you are paying storage fee

Re: Auto Insurance on imported car...

Try Zurich Connect www.zurichconnect.ch as they will do it based on the VIN number (Chasis number)

Alternatives are Winterthur and Basler through TCS.

We are picking up our new car next week from the UK and driving it down to Switzerland so needed to cover it on UK export plates plus the to and fro of getting it onto GE plates, we went with Zurich Connect as they offered a very comprehensive policy plus all of it in English including the insurance guide.

Then he has to trailer it to the garage to get the anti polution test and then trailer it for the "inspection at the cantonal testing place"

Alternatively get a specilist US garage to pick it up and take care of all this for you, it will cost but it comes down to a time versus money

The car has cleared customs. That's all -- No other Swiss authority has examined it as far as I know.

I'm shocked that I can get into the car and drive away before doing any further control or document inspection, but it looks like that's the case.

Do not be shocked our NEW car is brand new with "EEC Conformity Certificate" yet we have to have go and have "anti-polution test" followed by "inspection" the next day. This is a Left-Hand drive european model specification so this came as a bit of a shocker to us, isn't life interesting.

We are going to try a record attempt at this, already paid the duty as a bond to a customs agent, drive the car down on 30th Jan, Anti-Polution test on the 1st Feb along with going back to customs to show the car in the flesh and pick up some forms followed by inspection of the vehicle on the 2nd Feb. If we get passed that we get GE plates.

Re: Auto Insurance on imported car...

It seems that my situation is a bit different given that the car was imported duty-free. As far as I know, customs has no further interest in the vehicle. They stamped the 13.20A, assigned a matriculation number, and here it is.

Not so different it is just that we pay import duties on ours(they just want to see it to make sure it is real), the rest is pretty much the same. There are a couple of specilist US car dealers in Geneva why do you not one of these to help?
