I'll be going by car to Lausanne for 3 weeks, but will not be using my car during the time I am in Lausanne. Is there a place where I can find free parking in or around Lausanne where I can abandon my car for the 3 weeks? Thanks!

Try the lake. Jokes aside, this being Switzerland, there are people in Zurich who'd park their car in Lausanne if it were free. There is an international boarding school up on the hill...and if I were you, I'd try to talk to them to see if they are willing to let you leave it for 3 weeks (even for a small fee)....as parking anywhere in the world is becoming more and more like an extreme sport.

There are a couple of places at Pully near the Port where you can park for a few days or longer - but this is only during the winter months. If your coming in summer you will have to head out of town somewhere or pay.

Where are you thinking of Zimmo? I can't think of any commune out of town where legal, long-term parking is free.

Around Pully, near the lake. There is one place with just a Parking sign (no time limit shown). The other car parks around have the sign "15 heures, libre du 1er Oct au 30 April". Many of the cars don't seem to move.
The big car park in Ouchy is free over the weekends - or 5 chf per day during the week.

I pay that at my local rail station and I'm 40 mins. outside Lausanne.

If any reliable, free long term parking was available in Lausanne, why do you think people would be willing to carry on paying for a parking space ?

Just because there are gratuit car park spaces available doesn't mean they are libre though!

Well, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Especially not in Lausanne. If you really need a free parking lot, I would gamble on parking at EPFL (the federal technial school 15 minutes by metro 1 outside Lausanne). They don't check that you have a parking allowance THAT often..

Today I noticed this sign on one of the sides of the streets and I was wondering what was the meaning of it? Unrestricted parking space? Just on the other side of the road there was the same sign but with added text Only Macaron X....

If there is no restriction mentioned below the table (like max. 3 h) it means the default limitation applies, which is 1.5 hours, starting from the time that you have set on the blue clock (made of paper). You are supposed to place this paper-clock behind the windscreen, showing the "time" of your arrival. (after X h :30 minutes and before X+1 hour : 00 mins you should set X+1:00.
After X h : 00 mins and before X h : 30 mins you should set X h: 30 mins, as time of arrival on this clock).
So if you arrived at e.g. 15:23, you can set 15:30 on the clock and stay till 17:00. If you arrived at 13:01, you can set 13:30 and park till 15:00.
So in the best case you can park for almost two hours.

I live Pully and there is 6 hour parking around here. Free all day parking you will not find.

Make sure you do your homework well and look somewhere on outskirts of city. Watch out for speed cameras too.

Last time I was in Lausanne, there was plenty of free parking along Route des Plaines du Loup (opposite of the velodrome parking).
