How do I find how much car tax is going to be?

I am looking to buy a car to use in the Valais Canton, but before I do I am trying to find out how and I can find out how much the car tax will be?

Thanks

There is no car tax as such. You pay your local vehicle traffic office for the number plates. The cost depends on engine size. Google will find your local office and the rates will be published there...

Thank you Dougals Breakfast but as the Doctor thought I meant Verkehrsabgaben rather than Valais.

Thank you Doctor - that is what I was looking for. So just to be clear does that mean that Licence plate tax is based on the size of your boot and not the size of your engine??

And also do you think that the same rates will apply for the Valais region as for the Zurich region?

No. Engine capacity...

Boot size, indeed...

Re: How do I find how much car tax is going to be?

Lucky you. It is cheaper in Valais than Zürich.

I found the same page for Valas here: There you can download an Excel Sheet, and enter engine size, and it tells you how much it costs.

Re: How do I find how much car tax is going to be?

just to clarify:

The road tax based on Engine volume is "rent" for the license plates.

The 1st reply you got from DB is for Road Tax for using the swiss motorways. That is CHF 40/Year, payable by swiss drivers and foreigners, even if they just drive 1 mile on the motorway.

So you would need to pay both of them (or stick to rural roads)

Re: How do I find how much car tax is going to be?

It may be interesting for readers of this thread to know that the means of calculating road tax (verkehrssteuer) differs from kanton to kanton. SOme will be based on engine size and/or weight of the vehicle; others on weight alone (like Baselland). Glad I live in Baselland as I have a fairly light car with a relatively large engine
