Does that mean youre allowed to use mobile phones while driving in Florida?
And, more importantly, here? (I'll say again - in case people get scared again by the thought of me driving around without knowing the rules - I dont drive here, but like to know the rules to keep "my driver" in line )
No.

message is too short

Actually yes you can use your cell while driving in Florida, hence crazy maniacs on the freeway..

And I do not drive except to get to the store and home, I am currently studying the signs here before I get my license and new plates. Can't get either until my B permit arrives... UGH! What a long grueling process.. how many hoops do I need to jump thru?

Don't even get me started!!
Organising my B permit and waiting for it to arrive and all the problems that arose and all the different info I was being told from different places (Swiss Embassy in Australia and whoever I was dealing with over here obviously dont communicate a lot!) was the most frustrating and exhausting and disheartening few months of my life..
But just remember that once its all over and organised you will never even think about how difficult these times were (unless you hear a new person talking about it and it reminds you!) and they wont seem that bad

I took the California written test a few months ago. One of the two questions I got wrong concerned whether it was legal to use a mobile phone "in an emergency". I should have said yes; I assumed that even in such case one could and should pull over. (I exchanged a Florida one for the California licence but still had to take a written test. I'm now about to exchange a French for a Swiss one; I don't think there's a test of any kind in that case.)

Re: Emergency # ??? For being pulled over by CH police

My first license was a california, and I can see what you meant by your answer, I would have answered the same... I guess from what I have heard, the swiss license is good for ever, no expiration date, unless of course you really mess up.. LOL Not sure I would agree with that, but don't want to start a controversy here... Just think people should prove they are competent every so often.. I know I am a defensive driver in Florida, will remain the same here... be polite, let others in front and not be in a hurry..

I guess we are waiting until someone gets killed and then will implement the system. Why should things be learned the hard way
Things don't have to be learned the hard way. You just have to be realistic and realise that no matter what you do or what law you implement there will always be 5% of any population that want to do you harm!

The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws!

In that case CH must be very corrupt.

Are you sure? I use my cell phone here (in lovely Swissieland) while driving, and I don't think it's illegal. Well, I do use a headset though, wired or Bluetooth. Is that what you are referring to?

Yeah some more info would be great
People were happy to tell about Florida! But the answer for Switzerland was a little disappointing.. I am very curious..

You are right. Using a mobile with a handsfree device is allowed.

I was referring to using a mobile phone on its own - i.e. without handsfree.

EDIT: I took the question at face value: "Are you allowed to use a mobile phone while driving?" -> No... OMG, I've been in CH too long, answering the direct question only...

It is against the law to use a mobile phone while driving, except when using a hands-free system.

Thanks - in Australia apparently neither is allowed as its too distracting.. or maybe thats the law theyre trying to get.. it seems a little bit of a grey area.. so I had no idea what it was here.
But thanks!

Fellow motorists using their mobile whilst driving is one my bug-bears. I was overtaking a guy on the motorway last week and he started veering into the middle, I hit the horn and looked over and he was glancing at his mobile, texting away. Didn't even stop. W@nker.

Tell me about it, this morning on the motorway I looked over to my left and there was a guy 130 km/h with his face up next to her rear view mirror and shaving!

I don’t scare easily, but on the sight of that I dropped my lipstick, which knocked the doughnut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs, splashed and burned me, ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call.

Seriously, some drivers..

This is my WHOLE damned issue with speeding persecution. It is NOT speeding that causes accidents in the main but driving with undue care and attention! The laws as usual are an ass and only serve to generate tax revenue.
