Breakdown insurance for U.K. car

Hi -I had a look through the other threads here but couldn't find the answer.
Anyway, I have a car in the U.K. that I want to bring over to Switzerland. I have insurance for the journey (from my U.K. insurer) - they understand and accept the circumstances. However, I cannot seem to get breakdown cover for the journey as I am no longer a U.K. resident. The car is over thirty years old and has great sentimental value.
Once it is here, I plan to cover it under the insurance for my swiss car or tak out specialist insurance.
So, has anyone been in a similar situation and can recommend a company that could provide breakdown cover for a single journey?

Thanks

Re: Breakdown insurance for U.K. car

you can get TCS cover for a UK car - or if you have travel insurance here, you might find you get good recovery with that too.

Or with some credit cards, you get travel insurance which might cover your needs.

I did the same, and just lied about the residence. I still use my mother's or sister's address occasionly for delivery of items in the UK.

TCS is cheaper than the AA ;o)

I'd be worried about doing that as I know that if I breakdown in the middle of France and it's serious, it could cost the insurance company a lot of money and they may decide to make some enquires. I'd rather be honest about it all. Getting stuff delivered to a relative's address in the U.K. doesn't seem to be wrong at all.

Thanks - I'll look into those options.

Try talking to TCS about the circumstances - they are a friendly bunch and may have a bespoke solution (for some chfs of course).

However, good luck importing that car - have you looked into it?

Re: Breakdown insurance for U.K. car

I know my insurance only covers me for the first 90 days I'm in the country, so I have to get a Swiss policy in um a month and a half

Mind you, I'll be expecting a refund from the UK insurers for the 9 months that I won't be using, given that when I took the policy out I told them I'd be moving to Switzerland and ALL my driving would be there - they were happy to take the cash in that knowledge, so they can happily give some back when I cancel it

I also spoke to the AA about extending my cover with them to Europe, they gave me the Charles Bronson (no dice) so at the moment I'm relying on my ages old student Barclaycard cover to keep me out of motor trouble should the worst happen...(!)

I have spoken to a few people and it seems if a car is over thirty years old, it gets treated differently for emissions etc. There are certain conditions that must be met such as the car must be original (I need to look into this more as the tyres are certainly not original ). I believe that I can either import the car at the border or can do it a few days later at the local transport office. I don't really want to do it at the border as it took ages to do all the paperwork when we moved here in December - I hired a 7.5t lorry and drove it myself.
