Spare Tyre [legal requirements?]

I took my car to the local garage to have the winter tyres changed. One of the summer tyres were below the wear limit, so I opted for two new tyres. The guy was not happy with having two tyres of a different tread pattern on the rear. So I ordered two new tyres for the rear of the car and with the one good tyre I had I wanted it to be swapped for the spare tyre.

At the moment the spare tyre was an emergency one, smaller that a standard tyre, ie to be used to get you out of trouble. I wanted to swap this emergency one with a normal tyre from the car, there is enough space in the boot for the tyre and it seamed a normal request.

I was told that I couldn't do this which appeared strange, the guy said that it is a legal requirement to have a spare tyre- ok I can accept that, but why can I not swap an emergency spare tyre, for one which is a normal road tyre for the car. - Any ideas

perhaps your ( factory fitted ) emergency wheel can be used in both summer and winter conditions

if you purchase a normal wheel with say a summer tyre and need to use this is an emergency in winter conditions , you may have problems with insurance coverage. . . .

Best,

Nick

Re: Spare Tyre

you can have that regular wheel and tyre in the car instead of the space-saver.

who has a set of 5 winter tyres? I know I don't.

Our IT guy used to run a tyre business.

I asked him,
he just laughed.

Have you seen the factory-fitted tiny emergency tyre - that is bound to perform worse that any tyre regardless of the season...

Re: Spare Tyre [legal requirements?]

Thanks guys, my thoughts exactly - I just wondered whether there was a Swiss rule that nobody had heard of.

He probably wouldn't have had if a new spare tyre were to be bought

Actually there is no legal requirement to carry a spare tyre at all... And of course it is possible to carry just a tyre if you want. HOWEVER if the tyre does not have sufficient tread you can be done just as if it was on one of your wheels...

That's right, some sports cars have no room in the boot for one. If you get a puncture you have to call for assistance.
