Car carrying trains

Has anyone used any of the car carrying trains? Are there any tips you could pass on? Do they get big traffic jams in July?

We are planning to go on a tour of Valais and this train would save driving - http://www.bls.ch/e/autoverlad/autoverlad.php

I just cannot believe it's only CHF25 for car and passengers. They seem remarkably cheap, or an I misreading the information?

Re: Car carrying trains

Where did you see the CHF 25??? If I read it correctly, a 1-way ticket for a car carrying up to 9 passengers is CHF 90 ("prices per vehicle and direction"), and you get a reduction of CHF 10 if you book a return trip.

The BLS is heavily used, especially in summer, so they advise to (1) book well in advance and (2) arrive on time (between 60 -30 mins before departure).

CHF 25 for a car including passengers is right.

I have no experience with them, as I prefer to go over the pass than through a tunnel, and i have not been through during the winter.

Doc.

its kind of cool, yes there can be a lot of traffic, esp around the school holidays, they often signpost the average waiting time before the turn-off to the station (so you can decide to wait or drive over the pass) and waiting times go up to maybe 45-60 minutes

Re: Car carrying trains

Yes, I use the Kandersteg-Goppenstein train pretty often (we have a chalet in the Loetschental). 25 CHF per car in each direction; takes about 15 minutes through the tunnel. It does get busy at peak times, so around the school holidays (e.g. friday evenings!) the queues can go all the way back to Frutigen. But they are very good at putting on extra trains during busy times. Should save you a lot of time.
