You mean on the outside of the filter? I suppose if it is a strong magnet then it would tend to stay in position anyway?
Yeah, but the duct tape is good insurance. I've never cut a used filter open to see if it actually works - but I don't see why not ( unless the flow pressure overpowers the magnet)...

In my BMW, it is like 18 or 20 thousand kilometers between oil changes.

Would you be hay to reveal what you pay? I have just been told it will be 1,000 CHF my BMW Auto-Graf in Meilen, as for some reason they are saying I am not eligible for the free services as per BMW " Premium Service" status. That is usually 10yr/100,000km (my car is 2nd hand 38,000 km but in the system is noted as a diplomatic car - the first owner, not me...)

I assume for thr first buyer it has to do with getting a car totally free of tax and other add ons... they *did* fully load it with an incredible array of options however.

20 thousand km for an oil change? I would say that is way to rare even for a diesel BMW (I assume its diesel?). More like 8 to 10 thousand perhaps at the most...but 20?
For correct oil change interval on BMW dieslels, see section 5 of the PDF (LAST PARAGRAPH) - it has been reduced fro 13,000 miles to 11,000 miles

Which in metric is 18,000kms

Re: Oil Change

... Having just said 18,000 - the board computer says my oil is not due for change for another 28,000 km (oil was changed yesterday).

Perhaps the system settings etc has not been calibrated to the new tech recommendations, but that would be odd, right?

Anyway, I will change the oil in 18,000, myself this time.

BMWs have variable service intervals - these are based on the type of driving and the predicted wear rate (somewhere there is an article on how this is done) - currently it predicts you will need one in 28,000km. Spank the hell out of it for a few days and watch that number drop. I used to have great fun going for an alpine drive and seeing how KMs I did and comparing that to how many oil KMs were used

The flip is also true - on a long steady motorway cruise you can use fewer oil KMs than actual KMs.

Gone are the days you need more frequent changes.

I wish the oil change on our car only cost 100chf

just nip into coop home and hobby etc and look at the price of any half decent brand of oil, its shocking.

I did an oil change at the weekend, paid stupid amounts for the semi synthetic, then got distracted, left the oil cap off and dumped it all over the engine and road, doh, car smells lovely now
I recommend you to buy oil from Germany where the price for fully synthetic (group IV PAO synthetic oil, in german: Vollsynthetik) is usually less than semi synthetic you will find on shelves in Coop or Migros or in local garages.

Normally, if I buy any of the well-known brands meeting the required spec for my car I still can make it in less than 100 CHF: https://www.autoteile-meile.ch/Oele/...eSize=20&text=

Of course, I do oil changes myself.
