I have come across few taxis that charge 1/3rd of what I am normally used to paying. Anyone know the reason? Are there official and unofficial taxis in Zurich? Are some people running under the table taxis or something? I am not complaining as money saved is money earned

I've found that walking to the front of the Hauptbahnhof and taking a taxi from the rank there is usually a few francs cheaper than at any of the other taxi ranks nearby.

I've used Neidertarif taxi which is much cheaper than a normal taxi. It's a 4 seater Smart car.
