I was wondering if anyone could direct me to where I could find out how much it would cost to plate and insure my Harley Davidson motorcycle in Switzerland. I am currently living in the US but have a job offer in Schaffhausen.Thank you for you assistance.

The license plates costs vary by canton, engine size etc. I paid 250 CHF or thereabouts for a 1200.

the insurance company I have offers different types of insurance, and they have this "Seasonal driver", that costs like 25% more than traditional insurance, but you choose to drive or not during wintertime, and if you don't you get the money from those months back. I know it sounds weird, but a regular yearly insurance for my XVS 650 costs CHF390...thus CHF32 per month. I pay 550 for the yearly Seasonal Driver policy (CHF45 per month), but since I will not drive from November through March, I will get those CHF225 back...thus paying only CHF325 a year. Rather cheap, I'd say. For taxes I think I paid like CHF100 this year.

Thank you both for your help! It sounds like the cost to have the motorcycle is reasonable. The motorcycle I have is 1450cc and I have had it since 2004. Hopefully duty will not be too high.

If you have owned it more than 6 months (which you have) and you are importing it as part of your relocation (lloks like you are) then you won't pay duty. Just add it to the bottom of the 18.44 form (there's a special section for vehicles).

Before you bring it with you, you may want to be sure it will pass all the noise, lighting and pollution checks. Otherwise, it may be parked in your garage rusting away.
