FC Basel - Cluj Football at St Jakob's Park

Hi,
I may have acquired 2 FC Basel-Cluj champions league tickets this Tuesday - but never been before. The venue is St. Jakob’s Park stadium and the kick-off is 20.45

If anyone has been to a match at this venue, the advice I need is: how long will it take me to get from the park to Basel Bahnhof SBB for the train at 23.07 (this involves a walk, bus, tram, walk)? I don't really know how quickly I could be out of the stadium, for example.

Another alternative would be for me to drive. If I did this, would I be likely to be able to park up close by?

Finally, is this event likely to be a big crowd/exciting atmosphere? It will be the first live game for my son, who I would be taking.

Any advice appreciated.

Kind regards,

Patrick

You can easily take a tram.

From the main Bahnhof, you would take Tram 8, 10, 11 to 'Aschenplatz' (1 stop from the Bahnhof).
Then, take Tram 14 (which takes you directly to St. Jakob). It will be packed full of folks (generally if there is a game).
It should take 15 min or so from the station to get to St. Jakob.

Have fun!

...but when would I realistically be out of the (crowded) stadium given that the kick-off is at 20.45?

Answer's provided by Hubby (FCB season ticket holder) so taking no responsibility for their correctness!

They run trains from the stadium to the SBB these days too - so this is another option. He reckons you would just about make it, but it would be tight - if it's busy then it can take 15 mins seat to tram, then 15 mins on the tram... so you should just about make it.

He says driving to the stadium itself is not really an option - there's no decent nearby parking and the roads around the stadium itself are all closed. But it is an option to park somewhere down the line of the number 14 tram - so to find a spot in a white/blue zone in Muttenz, somewhere near the tram, from which it's about a half hour tram ride (in the opposite direction than town so fewer people going that way.)

Re: FC Basel - Cluj Football at St Jakob's Park

We normally drive there as there is a huge parking space next to the stadium.
We could park the car even during the Swiss Open + As Roma match.

It takes some time to get out of the parking house at the end but it is very well organized. The stadium is next to the highway.
Your son is going to be very tired and you would have to park the car anyway in Zürich at the Bahnhof.

One vote for car!

This sounds very promising - thank you, Soleil - so I shoiuld be able to just put "St Jakob's Park" into my Tom Tom, then (I didn't find the Basel FC website much help for travel assistance)?

St Jakob's park is fine, however.
There will be a detour (road lock? what's the right word in English?).
When you are driving from Zurich there will be signs (football signs + P) on the highway.
As far as I remember they can be seen at around Pratteln / the Delemont (road 18) junction.
I would add an extra 30 minutes at least.
