I'm hosting a couple of visitors in August who aren't very mobile and aren't fans of city sightseeing. My plan is to take them by train to somewhere we can easily get on to a cable car or mountain railway and enjoy the view from the top, without too much walking.

We would be travelling from Basel and they won't have Halbtax/Swiss Pass, so places on the north/west side of the Alps would be preferable to keep the time and cost down. Early starts are no problem though.

Somebody has suggested going to Spiez and up Niesen to me and that sounds pretty good - anybody know anywhere else similar? Is there anywhere where it's possible to do two peaks in one day?

Mt Pilatus, just outside Luzern, is a good mountain to go up if you don't want to do lots of hiking. I recommend the Golden Round Trip, where you can take a boat ride on the lake, take the cog railway up the mountain, enjoy the view from the restaurant, then take the cable-car down back to the city.

Also, I know you say that city sightseeing isn't their thing, but Luzern is really very pretty - especially because of all the intricately painted building facades - and might just change their minds!
