Vallorbe caves

Went there today for the first time, with an EF member who is a guest. Very impressive. BTW our guest talked to a Brit who lives in Nyon in the carpark- Was it you?

No... although as I currently earn less than 120K per year I am looking for a nice cosy car park to move into for cost saving reasons.

Stephen, the car park will be getting colder at night. Join the friends of this museum and you could live in an old military fort near Vallorbe,

An undiscovered advantage is you can watch TV free of charge, as even Billag cannot get in once you shut the doors!

I doubt if there are many colder places in Switzerland than Pré-Giroud...

Re: Vallorbe caves

So we were planning a trip down to the caves in Vallorbe last week.

However, the website is basically useless.
No mention of opening times or anything.
And the guys in SBB Tourism office didn't know anything.

Does anyone know if the caves are open in winter ?
What are the Opening hours ?

Thx.

It's in french but I think that's fair these days as so many people post links that are only in german!

Timetable on the left hand-side. Telephone number, etc. above that.

Thanks for the link. I actually had been to the site and that's where it gets confusing since I cannot speak french.

"novembre 2011 et mars 2012, samedi et dimanche de 13h30 à 16h00"

This talks about saturdays and sundays.
What about the rest of the week ?
Are they open ? Are they not ?

PS: Tried calling them too. No one answered the phone.

Re: Vallorbe caves

Sadly I think it's fairly clear that they're only open at weekends over the winter, which would be reasonable as it's a touristy destination and most winter tourists are here for the skiing.... a lot of the châteaux are closed too.

You could try ringing the Vallorbe Tourist Board to double-check?
021 843 25 83, I'd expect someone there would speak english.

Re: Vallorbe caves

The caves are not very popular in winter, people do not realise they are warmer inside than outside. So yes they probably are only open at weekends in November and March.

It is probable that the approach to the caves is very icy in Winter, and it isn't worth the money to keep it cleared with only a few visitors.

Try contacting the Tourist Office in Vallorbe, they will have all the information, contact@vallorbe-tourisme.ch

http://tel.local.ch/en/q/Vallorbe/Of....html?rid=ZGyM
maybe they will see an E-Mail ?

Re: Vallorbe caves

I understood it was closed in December, January and February. Opening again in March at weekends, in the afternoon only.

It's pretty impressive to go there in spring, when the underground river is massive after the snow melt.

Re: Vallorbe caves

Thanks for the tips guys.

I actually did try calling all the offices mentioned by you guys and no one answered. Guess they are hibernating or something.

Email...could work...I hope. Will give that a shot.

Thanks a bunch.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a response. As was said above, they are closed December, January & February. They will open again in March on weekend afternoons.
