My brother is coming and visiting us this weekend, he is only staying for the weekend so Friday is dinner day, Saturday is Basel day but on the Sunday I would like to show him somehting nice in the surroundings.

Anyone has any suggestions? It should not be too far away (max 30 min with car or public transport) and should be quite easy accessible since we have a one year old child to bring with us and one of us is eight monts pregnant and cant do too much physical activities...

How about a trip to Rheinfelden? Takes about 15mins in the car or you can train it from Basel. It's got a nice pedestrianised main street in the old town and some nice little places to eat and drink to watch the world go by.

Wasserfallen? Rheinfalls?

Rheinfelden is fairly well shut on Sundays, although there are a couple of nice restaurants you can go too.

The Rhine falls are about 2 hours from Basel by public transport.

Wasserfallen is at the end of the number 70 bus line (or for a shorter journey, train to Liestal then pick up number 70 bus from there) .. cable car up into the Jura hills, lots of restaurant and play park opportunities .. for those who fancy it, a 30 minute walk takes you to a lovely view point where, on a clear day, you get to see the Alps. Typical Swiss mountain restaurants .. and for the more adventurous, some really great hikes along the "crêtes" (cliff edges) in direction of Passwang. Oh and a few nice hikes that are buggy compatible.

We go often - with our young children, and can recommend the walk over to Waldweid Bergrestaurant .. from there you get the Alp views and there is a little play park and goats to pet etc.

Wasserfallen is a placce in Basel Land (but please do not expect to see any waterfalls there). However they have a nice parcour park if you like such kinf of activity (http://www.wasserfallenbahn.ch/de/an.../waldseilpark/)

Have a look at the church in Mariastein. It's a bus ride from Fluh tram stop. You can have nice ride into the countryside and visit the church. In Fluh, there's a ruin of a castle that you can walk up to but it might be a bit too strenuous for the pregnant woman.

If you are interested in ancient culture, Augusta Raurica in Augst is one of the greates places in Not-South-Europe! With a Roman theatre, a Roman house, museum and many many other places. There is a train from Basel to Augst, it's only 14 kilometers.

In Basel there is the Zoo, Botanic Garden, the little Zoo Tierpark Lange Erlen in the North of Basel.

We took our two year olds to the Basilea swimming centre today and it was a fantastic place for children of all ages, families and whoever likes to swim.

It was clean, warm but not too warm, had several pools including toddler and baby pools, flumes and slides for older kids and nice pools for swimming.

What made it so pleasant as Brits used to living in the US was how clean it was, and how even the teenagers were polite and not running around etc.

We shall be going every weekend over the winter! Our kids loved it.

The Museum of Music Automatons in Seewen (SO), just outside Basel, is also worth a visit:

The tour is also available in English (we took a non-German speaker), and the automatons are all working models. Some are huge and fantastically elaborate.
