Granny is coming to visit next weekend to look after our toddler and dog.

That means Mr and myself have one night away and we have no idea where to go. We live in Lausanne and don't want to drive too far (2 to 2 1/2 hours max) plus i am pregnant and so unable to ski so that rules out a quick trip to the slopes.

Any ideas for a night away? So far we have yet to visit much of Switzerland, and now that we have this last minute opportunity i suddenly feel overwhelmed.

What we are looking for is a nice hotel and something to see / do that is not too strenuous.

Can you see a mountain (or even a decent hill) from your house?

If so, go and stay in a hotel up on the side of that hill somewhere - sit on the terrace at sunset with a glass of something nice, look down at your town with the lights coming on, and be amazed all over again at how beautiful and peaceful it all looks.

This is my absolute favorite kind of mini-break. Quick and easy to get to, and yet once you're there you might as well be a million miles away.

Aren't Grannies great, hey! From Lausanne you have so much choice! How about a spa- within about 1 hour you have Ovronnaz with fabulous views, or further down the Rhone Valley Loèche-les-Bains in an amazing rocky 'buttonhole'. In Ovronnaz you can have a studio actually in the compound- and in Loèche (also known as Leukerbad in German) there are several spas all with Hotels 'attached'. Ovronnaz is only 40 mins from Lausanne, Loèche about 1h20 (above Sierre). Or there is another spa with Hotel in Charmey near Gruyères. What about Gstaad? The list is endless.
Could drive to Burgundy to visit some wine cellars. Or over to Aosta for a taste of Italy.

If i get the chance (also pregnant and with a first grader) id like to go to a piano concert and also what Mathnut suggested.

how about you go crazy and pay grandma and the kids to go somewhere while you stay home and do nothing???

Go across the lake and book a room in the Spa in Evian! Only 30 min by boat, and it's a lovely little town with a few nice restaurants
