What to do with a 7 month old in Basel?

I have my nephew visiting in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for ideas for what to do with him and my brother and sister in law.

They have said just walking around is good enough. They're here to catch up and see us, that's the main point, and so I can have lots of cuddles with my nephew, but I'd also like to keep them all fairly entertained.

We'll probably go to Lange Erlen and maybe Grün 80 but I was just hoping for some other tips or advice from anyone.

There is an exhibition on at Foundation Beyeler that we'd like to see but not sure about taking a baby there. We'd probably walk there and hope he sleeps but would it be frowned upon if we took him round the exhibition?

At 7 months old I am sure he'll be happy with cuddles, food, naps and staying warm.

An indoor playground, zoo or whatever will not extra entertain him then sitting on your lap!

Have fun

Absolutely take him to the art exhibition! I haven't been there yet (but would love to see the Surrealism exhibit too) but I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem. I've taken my children to many many exhibits, even as energetic toddlers. If he's a baby in a pram, you'll be fine

As for other activities, I think the previous poster is right, he'll just be happy to tag along with the grown ups, though Lange Erlen is a good idea.

Re: What to do with a 7 month old in Basel?

I went to the Fondation Beyler with my then 12 month old. They made me check his buggy in at the cloakroom and gave me a (brand new) chicco stroller to go around the galleries ... something to do with the floor??? not sure really - I was so astounded I didn't dare ask. He slept for an hour or so then wanted to get out (he could already toddle) and as the place was practically deserted, I thought it would be ok. After him toddling through a couple of rooms (of course he did not touch anything) I was politely asked to put him back in the buggy! Again not sure why as again too astounded to ask.

It was all very very politely done, but I still look back on it and think it was really overkill. Anyway they must have revised their policy because I last went to the Klimt exhibition and there were lots of small babies/toddlers and many with their buggies and many of them walking about .. even running! And a couple even being (breast) fed! I'd say in the intervening 8 years there has been a huge policy shift towards children friendliness.

To echo other advice, the baby will be happy with silly smiles and knee jiggling. The only thing is to keep your timetable flexible as baby will want to feed/sleep when baby wants to feed/sleep so prepare for lots of cafe stops. Make the most of it!

Re: What to do with a 7 month old in Basel?

Thanks for all your replies. I did read something on the website about them maybe asking you to change to one of their strollers but I just wanted to hear some first hand experience of this. Makes me feel more confident to go.

Thanks again.
