Walking in the mountains in the winter - nr Zurich

Hi All,

I have lived in Zurich for a few months now and I have never been to the mountains.

It's safe to say I am a complete novice so forgive me if the answer to the following question(s) are obvious.

Firstly - I am not interested in skiing or snowboarding at this point, but I do want to get to the mountains, experience the fresh air and enjoy some snow.

Therefore, I wondered if anybody had any tips on somewhere where I could go walking / hiking near Zurich... also.. any tips on suitable clothes / footwear would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can check out skidefond.ch It's got ski trails (downhill and xcountry) but also snowshoeing, etc. It's by region, you can get the snow report, and often there is bus service there.

I'm not sure about where to walk without snowshoes, anywhere without snow I suppose. Have fun!

There is a very pleasant and easy trail along the Jura in Kanton Zürich. Starting point is Regensberg and follow the yellow hiking signs towards Baden. This takes you up past along Lägeren initially on forest trails and then the path gets a little stoney as you head west.

There are a gazilion ideas here , just put in your criteria.

Send me a PM if you need more ideas we have a Facebook Group dedicated to hiking around the Zürich area, would be pleased to assist.

Have a look at the Stickies in the Sports/Activities Section on here.
Lots of info and links including helpful stuff about clothing etc.
Many places in the mountains clear tracks to make them suitable for walking on.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for all the replies to this thread guys! Also gives me some good information. One more question: by "snowshoes", do you mean these things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowshoe ??

Probably. Snowshoe walking, and tracks marked for this, has boomed in the last couple of years.

im actually picked up some snow shoes recently for, relativly cheap (100 chf in aldi). they also have ones for 30 there! you can hire them i guess. i mention this as, i am a hiker and do not ski or board but fancied something a little different. plus, it opens up new routes and technicalities whilst maintaining a walking type trip. something to think about!

Re: Walking in the mountains in the winter - nr Zurich

I went hiking up in Muerren (in the Berner oberland) a few weeks ago in the snow - I didn't have snowshoes, just some nice waterproofed hiking boots. Those along with some snowpants, a winter jacket, and a good hat kept me toasty It was actively snowing, so my husband bought one of those face masks as well to keep his face warm. Have fun!
