Looking to do a photoshoot with the obliging hubs soon. I am not very familiar with the mountains in Switzerland (or anywhere really) but in theory I would like us in a snowy area + fairly large mountainous back drop.

Any favourite recommendations near Zürich? We will have a car and some crazy courage to brave the cold temperatures...

That'll be almost anywhere in the Alps!

Engelberg and surrounding area is popular with bollywood producers for it's scenery.

How near to Zürich? Engelberg is a good recommendation -- also Hoch Ybrig. Further afield, about 1.75 hours by car, it's hard to beat Grindelwald and its surroundings, which include the Eiger and the Jungfrau (and going up to Jungfraujoch on the train is a must). And further again, Zermatt is iconic (the Matterhorn, aka the Toblerone Mountain) and very spectacular.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding snow at the moment ...

Oh oh, I forgot to mention that I'm looking for something NOT covered in skiers, snowboarders, etc. Realise there are going to be people around, but it would be a shame if there are ski lifts and hoards of people flying down the mountain.

I think my problem is that there are so many options... it's hard to think of something relatively close by when I don't go to the mountains that often...

The Eiger has very few people on its North Wall. Not alive, anyway.

Go to the Viadukt Market Thursday evening for drinks at Grumpy's fabulous British Cheese stall around 7.30 and meet the locals (=expats) and they will give you lots of ideas. Especially Grumpy who lives in a stunning area near Zurich with the most amazing back drop mountains. Cheers.

head down to the Walensee. I'm always impressed by the Churfirsten, and they are really close to Zürich.

We rented a place in Wengen for the Summer for walking and the scenery was just magnificent. Winter is also great for the skiing and again views. It's in the same area as Eiger - Mönch - Jungfrau mountain range in the heart of the Bernese Oberland.

I reckon at most ski resorts, you could walk 10m up from a ski lift, and have pristine views over another side of the mountain. Otherwise to get what you want, you might want to consider a set of snow shoes, many resorts also have hiking trails that are less well travelled.

Aw, busy this Thursday! We are actually looking to go this weekend maybe... so I'm trying to sort everything out now. Very last minute, but if the weather's sunny we'll be trying!

Thanks for all the non-ski-populated suggestions! As it is a photoshoot, we will probably not be able to hike/snowshoe walk to a location with our photographer and his assistant with their gear. Kind of disabled.

Well, I am a bit biased but how about Klöntalersee. It's about an hour's drive from Zürich. There isn't a whole lot of sun in the winter but a fantastic atmosphere. Here is a photo taken from the road at the end of the lake.
