Zürich to Venice by car

Hello, we are planning to visit Venice during Easter vacations. We would like to travel by car. Some friends recommend travel by train.
Has anyone driven to Venice by car. Any suggestions?

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

No, but I have thoroughly enjoyed going there by train several times. Every so often it is possible to buy very cheaqp train tickets from Zurich to Milan ( 25chf) and then to tag on the extra to Venice ( cheaper travel than in Switzerland)

If you want ot break your journey along the way, a car can be handy. But, you can;t use it in Venice itself. (park and walk, or take water taxis.)

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

I did it.

I went from Zurich to Verona first.
And then from Verona to Venice (Just beside)
But as explained above, car is not really useful in Venice You can park it in one of the big parkings at the entrance of the city.

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

We drove to Venice via Milan and stayed in Lido di Jesolo (the beach to the north of Venice) Then we had a day trip to Venice via a ferry.

On the drive to Venice we left early to get through the Gotthard before any traffic began to build but then got stuck in the unsightly traffic as we by passed Milan. The rest is easy.

On the way home we had a day trip through Verona. Quite honestly it was me who just wanted to do the Romeo and Juliet tourist thing. Then we headed north through Austria to come home. It was a beautiful drive through the Tyrol but the toll roads were an unexpected expense.

You might want to avoid the Gotthard on the way home. And unless driving at 2am you could choose a different and probably faster route over the Alps. There is some spectacular scenery in the South Tyrol part of Italy. On our way home we decided to come back just to that area for another holiday/long weekend.

Enjoy

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

Your post indicates that you want to drive to this area at easter, you should try to avoid the Gotthard tunnel especially on the way back if you don't want to sit in a traffic jam for 2-4 hours which is how long it could be on a holiday weekend like easter.

Ive done it, found it too long and wouldn't do again. The last time we went by airplane and it was much better. The water taxi is just a 5 min walk from the terminal.

You can get cheap flights on EasyJey from Basel.

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

We are thinking of having a similar route to Venice (Zurich > Venice), thank you for your input!
I have a few questions:
1 - Is it easy to park the car? Can we park in the street or we have to leave it in a park somewhere?
2 - Where did you stay over night? Any suggestions?
3 - How long does it take to Venice by ferry?
4 - How about toll roads in Italy? Do we have to buy in advance?

Thank you.

--It is better to stay and park in and around Mestre .
2 - Where did you stay over night? Any suggestions? No comments as we stayed in our friends place

We paid by cash . So you need to go in cash line in toll. for us it is around 30 eur one way
or you can buy viacard

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

Well, Venice has literally no streets, Venice if car-free place, you may not drive in Venice. There is a huge parking place where you have to park your car (around 25 Euro daily)

Overnighting is up to you, you can look for airbnb, or hotels, depending on your budget

Toll roads in italy are like you get a ticket by entrance and pay when you leave it (VISA is possible, or cash, or a special card that can be bought in advance)

I'm actually think about staying in Lido di Jesolo as Robyn did. And take the ferry to Venice. What do you think? I know cars in Venice are not allowed

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

We were there couple of weeks ago. There are lot of nice apartments inside the city for very reasonable prices (1 bedroom ap. nearby Rialto bridge was 100 EUR per night). Park better at Tronchetto - it is cheaper (24 EUR/night) and straightforward - parking at Piazzale Roma requires to leave your car open! with the key in the ignition lock! in Italy! for 30 EUR per night...

Going there by car is a nice journey. Most of the time in Italy they have 3 to 4 lane flat highways. The only "-" is the price - trip to Venice cost ca. 25 EUR.

Did you stay actually in Jesolo? We want to stay there, any suggestions of an hotel/hostel? And did you take the bus to Punta Sabbioni and then ferry?

Re: Zürich to Venice by car

If you've gotten used to driving in Switzerland be aware that driving in Italy is quite a different experience. 25 years ago we did Bern over the alps to Milan and then on to a beach place south of Venice and caught a ferry from there. I don't think we drove it all in one day though.

I actually liked it - not so boring as in Switzerland and also enjoyed crazy Italians on Smarts doing ca. 150 km/h and overtaking me...

Actually, it's FAR more boring.

Flat, and no curves for hundreds of km!

It's like driving in the mid-west of the US!

Yep, although the mid-west doesn't stink like the po valley in late summer. Were it me, and the trip was just to Venice, I would take the train.
