Hi everyone,

Could anyone recommend the best place(s) in Switzerland to watch the fullmoon rise?

The fullmoon this saturday (May 5th) will appear as the largest and brightest of this year. I hope the sky will be clear enough.

In the area of Zurich just get to the highest point: Uetliberg

That is of course not the only highest point around, thus depends more on what you find as a comfortable place to watch from.

There is of course also http://www.urania-sternwarte.ch/ which might be a cool spot to watch from.

The moon will rise at about 109 degrees azimuth on Saturday, i.e. a little bit south of due east. So you want to be somewhere with a low horizon to the little-bit-south-of-east, and maybe a lake would be nice for reflections.

Looking at a map of the Zürich area, I'd say Wädenswil would be about ideal - nice long view down the lake toward the east.

To be honest I wouldn't travel for this though. Go to Bürkliplatz or anywhere else you don't have buildings in the way. You'll still see the same moonrise whenever it rises - it'll just be a few minutes later if there are mountains on the horizon.

Watching the moon rise through trees on the shoulder of a mountain can be quite beautiful too - you can actually see it moving.

I'll be there, moonwatching. That would actually make for a great ef event, if somewhat surreal.

Eh, why not? Bring a thermos (or a flask) and a blanket to wrap round your shoulders....

I'll add an event to the calendar if you like. Wädenswil or Bürkliplatz/Enge?

(That's assuming it's clear Saturday night, of course. Weather forecast doesn't look brilliant right now, I have to say. It could clear off though.)

For Waedenswil (I assume the sightseeing point behind Cindys Dinner on A3, 47.22° N, 8.66333° E) the moon will rise behind Etzel at 8:45 pm. This view point is better in the October to March when the moon will rise more in the north just over Säntis.

For Hochwacht Albis (47.266366° N 8.531667° E) the moon will rise behind Wiggis at 8:36 pm and will go over the Glarneralps (Drusberg, Tödi, etc).
This could be a top spot on July 3, when the full moon will the lowest in the sky.

For Bürkliplatz the Moon will rise behind the Forch at 8:44pm. Then will go over the Alps.

I'd recommend outdoors. But not many of the posters here are familiar with that third dimension.

Mm, I don't have a car so didn't even know there was a sightseeing point off the A3. I was thinking Wädenswil harbor - but on closer examination (read: on measuring the angles instead of guessing) that's not so brilliant, the pre-alps of canton Schwyz will be in the way.

OK, scratch Wädenswil then. As Zürichsee locations go, Oberrieden looks like our best bet... bit out of the way though, and if we get there and the weather doesn't cooperate there's precious little else to do.

Ah, hang it, shall we just say Bürkliplatz? Everyone knows where it is, easy to get to, easy to get back from - and it's only an extra 10 minutes' wait. I'll post the event.
