Hello Folks,

am going on a vacation to Vienna and planning to drive from Lausanne to Vienna (and back) and was hoping for some tips and suggestions for making this journey. The plan is to leave in the evening - drive for 4/5 hours, have a night halt and then continue the remainder of the journey the next day. Haven't driven long distance in Europe so all suggestions are welcome.

We drove to Munich and Salzburg which were both really lovely. Haven't driven all the way to Vienna though.

Lausanne - Munich is about 5/5.5 hrs
Lausanne - Salzburg is about 6.5 hrs.
Munich - Vienna then is about the same 5/5.5 hrs.

I really really liked Munich. So I think it's a good place to spot. I also liked Salzburg. If you have time, I'd spend on day in Salzburg on the way there & the other in Munich on the way back.

I have a GPS in the car. Do I need stuff like road maps (Michelin maps) to plan the trip?

We did it all with GPS & Google Maps. Actually our trip was around the area. So like I said, I didn't make it all the way to Vienna. So we also visited Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen and other towns around using the GPS to see how far they were or to go off on the side roads, etc. I love my GPS!

But I also like maps! So if you have one take it with you. You could just stick with a guide book that has some maps in it.

We visited Vienna in April and fell in love with the city. It is very clean and the people are very warm and friendly. There are so many places to visit like the Schonbrunn Palace, Hofsburg Palace, Velbedere, Sissi Museum, Albertina Museum, etc. Don't miss on watching an opera or a musical concert. Three days was not enough to see everything, so we are definitely going back another time.
