My wife and me are on the way of creating a Boardgame Association in Basel. I would like to survey a bit around the english speaking community, to gather information about how many people would like to join and the level of commitment.

The idea of the association is to provide a place where to meet twice per month (f.e.) to spend an evening playing boardgames. We're also interested in creating a community of boardgamers to share interests, information and meet new friends.

I saw that there is a lack of this kind of association (at least in Basel) that works within an international atmosphere. German is usually a barrier to step into existing groups, therefore this association will use english as a "corporative" language.

Regarding where to play, I contacted my Quartier and they offered us a nice room with a big table, chairs and a table-football, for the nice price of 30.-/evening.

This somehow stablishes a quote for the members of the association and, depending on how many we are, it fixes the amount of times per month that we can gather together. The first thing to say about this is that we don't want to take a dime from this. The association will be, of course, non-profit, and all the money will be used to pay the rent of the room, and if there is an overhead to use it in events. For example, to buy a game, organize a tournament between members and give it to the winner; or organize a Christmas barbacue. Ideas are welcome!

This said, our initial guess would be 10.-/month/member. 6 members would allow us to play twice per month, which is our initial aim. If we are more people, then we can rent the room more times, up to once per week, or create more events.

Up to now, we have a nice collection of games (more than 120), and we will be happy to share them for playing. We have from casual fast-paced fillers, up to heavier strategic boardgames (gamers can see our collection in BGG under the nickname realnewton). Of course, members will be free to propose games they own and bring them for playing.

There's been several gaming nights organised by EF members in the past with a lot of interested people - it might be worth getting in touch with people who've been involved with those.

Just put "gaming" or "games" into the search bar and you'll find quite a few relevant threads (amongst all the PS2 games for sale )

Personally, I'm not specially interested in backgammon. My background is more on the strategic Eurogames side, but this might be a good opportunity for you to find new opponents and/or to teach some of us.

Sorry. I didn't use the best words to explain myself.
It seems from your reply that I gave the impression of banning something. Not at all! All boardgames have a space here. Backgammon included. As I said, this is an opportunity to come and find people with the same interests.

Personally (and that means only me) I played a few times a lot of years ago and I didn't get hooked. Could be because of a bad introduction to the game or my own ignorance. But this does not imply that people cannot come and play Backgammon (myself included), or chess, or go. A nice thing of having an association like this one is to try different games that you might never played before o never thought about.

My background is based in strategy, work-placement, resources management, deck-building, etc... So I might be a bit biased to that kind of games. For that reason, it would be good to count with someone to bring to the table the classic games. Even more if is used to competitive playing as I think you are.

The idea of making an association is to meet with people, talk about games, share experience and play! No matter what.

I revive this old thread just to say that the Board Game Basel association is healthy and working since last September. We're now 15 members, and meet on Fridays, twice per month.
