Engelberg - Cheap hostel/hotel deals

As it looks like Engelberg has the best snow conditions at the moment, I'm most likely going to go there Friday morning and hit it till Sunday.

Does anyone know of any good deals there or cheap accommodation. It will most likely just be myself as the missus has to work. If anyone is keen to get amongst it then by all means...

Their website normally has some last minute deals on accommodation or ski/ accommodation packages.

Re: Engelberg - Cheap hostel/hotel deals

I was there on Monday and today - great weather both days, with a little fresh powder today, down to the village level.

The cheapest place to stay is probably the youth hostel - a very nice building within walking distance of the town centre and train station.

Cool. We've been away in Flims for a week. How's the skiing coming on? Or have you just been doing langlauf?

And for the OP - I second the youth hostel advice. Never heard anything bad about it (although never used it myself either).

Was gonna suggest that to you yesterday but wasn't sure if that's what you were looking for. The only other thing that came to me was how are you gonna get down and back up from the valley at night? I think the last cable car up there is 4pm which means you're stuck on the mountain unless you fancy hiking up to the hotel with snow shoes!

You mean I'm stuck at the hotel from say 430 ??? No worries, I'll be too buggered to do much else. For me the biggest bonus is being the first on the freshly groomed piste the next morning...

In fact the lift up to Truebsee runs till around 1730, sometimes later by arrangement. They won't normally let skiers up after 4 (ish) though, but will be fine if you're staying at the berghotel.

Just very sedate langlauf so far - another week or two and I hope to be back on the DH's.

Re: Engelberg - Cheap hostel/hotel deals

Hopefully you do not get a day like last Saturday, jeez, it has put me off Engelberg perhaps for the rest of the season.

Was my most stressful and wasteful day there. Done one run by 12 and I was there at 7:50 with my lift pass by 8:30.

They seriously need to sort out their lifts and queing technique. I made the mistake of wanting to see how my bro and dad were getting on at their lesson, couldnt get back to the lift, thought I would do the run to the bottom and was behind 3 times as many people who just arrived as when I got there several hours ago. With hordes of people pushing in everywhere. The asians piling up the single line que and highjacking the lifts was making my blood boil after waiting 2 hours

You can try contact jacqueline@swankylizard.com

We stayed with her at her chalet last season when we done Engelberg for long weekend in March 2012. Affordable nice chalet, about 10 min walk from lift. It sleeps 8 I think, and worked out 127 chf each I think for 4 nights.

Try the caravan park. The vans are heated of course but I wouldn't try pitching a tent!

Yeh I know you can charge it online, thats not my issue, my issue was the pure volume of people there, the non order of the que, and the fact if you mistakenly ski to the bottom in such conditions you lose 2 hours of your day as you are then behind all the people just arriving between 10-12.

I think its silly that if you have already paid, and been up, that you are forced to que with the others who have just arrived.

Lesson learned though, dont ski to the bottom until you are ready to leave or its dead.
