Places to take my Mum

Just realised my original plan of taking her to Ballenburg museum village place has been scuppered by it being inconveniently closed.

Any other ideas?

Something outsidey but not too strenuous would be good, like an open air museum. I could take her to Bern and show her the bears and the pretty town, but she's not much for just wandering aimlessly and isn't much for just looking at pretty buildings. she likes to have something specfic to look at or do

She's already done the boat down the Zurisee and the train up to Rigi.
Anything within 1.5 hours of Zürich would be great.

Re: Places to take my Mum

How about a trip to St. Gallen to explore the town and visit the USESCO World Heritage Site, including the Cathedral and famous Abbey Library. Lots else to see in town depending on how much time you have, and if it's a nice day, it might be worth travelling either there or back on the Voralpen Express, which is a train that runs through the hills from St. Gallen to Luzern; you can access it at Rapperswil. It's a beautiful journey.

Re: Places to take my Mum

how about combining a trip to St.Gallen with Appenzeller and take the Appenzeller Bahn, take train from zurich airport to Gossau, from Gossau take the narrow gauge train up into Appenzeller hills, a really pretty journey, get off at appenzeller for a wander about then get back on and had to St.Gallen, have a walk round St.Gallen then take a train direct back from St.Gallen to zurich airport

you could always go to the Paul Klee Museum, stop at the Bear Pits on the way back, lunch at the Tram Depot (nice beer for you) & stroll back up through the Old Town.

Re: Places to take my Mum

The weather really determines how much you can do outdoors

If it's not blustery, you're in Rapperswil and you fancy spot of lunch, head along the footbridge over the lake to Hurden. It takes about 20 minutes. There's a spooky atmosphere to the shallow waters. Apparently there were ancient settlements of fishermen who lived in houses on stilts all around the area, way back when Adam was a lad.

It can be melancholic in an attractive way and the light is magnificent. Although the road runs nearby, it's surprisingly quiet. The 360° panorama is wonderful when there's snow on the hills.

Once in Hurden, there are a few posh restaurants where you can warm your toes by a fire and eat like a Lord.

I took my Ma there a while back and she always wants to return. Weird what they enjoy...

Re: Places to take my Mum

I actually did the Voralpen Express and St Gallen on Saturday with my folks and gran - it's a lovely place.

Point to note - the older trains have better restaurant cars which sell beer

Re: Places to take my Mum

As Zug_bound mentioned, the Hergiswil glass art place might interest your mum. The stuff is very pretty but expensive, of course.

Visit the Cham lake park -- it's very charming and calming with a lot of bird life and very friendly folk walking about with or without dogs and/or babies.

How about Mt Titlis? Interesting igloo, free tubing (is your mum adventurous?) and lounging in the sun on beanbags and hammocks.

Don't know if the Hoelgrotte near Baar is open in March, but it's worth a visit. Cave formations and such.

Thought you were going to mention Football on Sunday, any standard welcome.

Cheers for the help everyone, hope the weather stays like this.

Re: Places to take my Mum

How about Augusta Raurica?

You can wander around the old roman ruins, there is a nice little museum of the archeological finds... and if time permits, you can head on to Basel.

http://www.baselland.ch/docs/kultur/augustaraurica/1/

And, it's farther than you wanted, but my folks liked the castles at Bellinzona very much - the train is ca 3 hours, but quite an enjoyable trip.

http://www.bellinzonaturismo.ch/fram...=31&menu_id=84

Brienz and the Giessbach Falls are quite nice, ca 2 hours away, but a scenic train ride:

I'd also vote for St Gallen - the cathedral and library are magnificent, the town is lovely.

The library in St Gallen is beautiful. I'd pass on the Augusta Raurica ruins. I was not that impressed.
