I think that some people won't believe it until they get there and find everything closed

an alternative to the Pilatus, offering views of the Pilatus is the RIGI

From Zürich you can reach Arth-Goldau-Bahnhof per direct train

Die Rigi, eingebettet zwischen Zuger-, Lauerzer- und Vierwaldstettersee Von Goldau und Vitznau erreichen sie den Staffel innerhalb kurzer Zeit .

Kriens and cable car is the cheapest option.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

I have some visitors coming soon, this sounds wonderful,
would it be a good idea to drive to Kriens, (from Zurich) then take the cable cart to Fräkmüntegg, then eat there.. and possibly walk there for a bit.
anybody done this? thanks for your advice!

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

I would suggest parking in, or getting the train to Luzern then doing the golden circle - if you are ok with a day trip and are not too bothered about an expensive one. the golden circle is the boat from Luzern (by KKL building and bahnhof) to alpnachstad across a part of the beautiful lake. Then steep, old fashioned cog train to the top of pilatus. Up there you can walk around a little bit on the platform and take in the view. There are not really any other walks at the top unless you want to walk down but it is steep, rocky and you need to be well prepared. Then tske the new cable car down to fraumuntegg where you can walk, eat and do activities. From there tske the gondola down to kriens where you get the bus back to Luzern centre. I did this with my sister and it took the best part of a day. It was more of a planes, trains and automobiles sort of day that hiking but the views were amazing.

How soon are your visitors coming, though? The cogwheel train does not reopen for the summer season until early/mid May (the exact date is snow-dependent), so you can't do the golden round trip before then.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

Taty99, you can to the Kriens-Pilatus gondola/ cable car run as of this weekend. We did the Kriens-Pilatus Kulm yesterday and it was quite a bit of fun. Only thing which was not so great was the poor visibility at the top. For some 5 mins or so, the clouds dispersed a bit, and we got a glimpse of what the view would be like.

We parked at the Kriens cable car station (Schlossweg 1, Kriens, if you use your TomTom), and then went up the gondola and cable car. We are looking forward to hiking down with the kids in summer from Frakmuntegg to Krienseregg, or to Kriens, with a bit of luck.

So if your guests are coming this month, I think you can have a nice day out, weather permitting.

But please, for heaven's sake, make sure your guests are properly dressed. Never ceases to amaze me that people think wearing high heels and a jumper at 2000+ m will be fine! Winter coat (preferable waterproof and windproof), boots, hats, gloves and scarves please. Even more so if you have small children in your party.

Thanks Clumsy Maman, that's very helpful, I really would love to do this and I'm quite useless at organizing something...
and I have a Tomtom and my kids are not too small, and I do insist on everyone dressing really well for the mountains.. I also find it appalling when I see people (last time in Schaffhausen?) with high heels and small dresses when you have to walk so much. I hate being cold as well.
