How to get the Pilatus kulm?

I'm planning to go up to the Pilatus kulm on Saturday and I wanted to know if anyone knows if you can leave your car in Kriens, I have seen that there is a parking but anyone know how much it costs, I do not know if it's better to go by train there. Thank you.

You can leave your car in Kriens, plenty of spaces. Alternatively make your way to Alpnachstadt on the other side and take the cablecar up to Pilatus.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

If you decide to go my train via Alpnachstadt by train, check that you are on one that stops there. Many of them don't.

Another option is to do the Golden Round Trip: Lucerne – Alpnachstad by boat.
Alpnachstadt – Pilatus Kulm by cogwheel railway. Pilatus Kulm – Kriens by cable car then back to Lucerne

We left our car at the parking garage in Kriens overnight last June--it cost 5CHF.

But don't go now, the railway doesn't run in winter.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

Next year there will be a new cable car from Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus with panoramic seating that should appear like a helicopter cockpit.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

Note that from 1st September 2014 the top section of the cable car will be closed for replacement.New one opens next year. Rack railway will be the only way up, unless you are hiking up. The gondolas from Kriens to the midway stop are still operating

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

You can hike up too from either side.

From Alpnachstadt to Kulm is ~3.5 to 5 hour hike.
Poles are handy.

Pilatus Kulm is closed from 15November.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

Alpnachstad has a big car park alongside the railway tracks. Then it's an easy hike to the top. About 3.5 hours for average fitness or you can try running it in about 2.5h ..... It's 30 minutes quicker on the way down, but watch your knees. Snow line is currently above the peak, so you should be good to go.

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

My preference is to take the cable car up from Hergiswil to Alpgschwänd; cheap and quite a cosy place to visit. From there you can hike all the way up in a couple of hours or walk 30 minutes to Fräkmuntegg and take the cable car up. Just make sure to check the opening hours :-)

It is the cable car from Fräkmüntegg that is being replaced

Re: How to get the Pilatus kulm?

Hey all

What's the best route to take my parents to at first week of January? I think the cogwheel car is closed anyway so what options do I have left?

Is it even a good idea to go that time of the year, does anyone know if it's cold inside those cable cars? Looks like we'll spent quite a few hours in them and dont want them to catch a cold.

Crazy questions!

You don't catch colds from being out in the cold. And you won't be in the cable cars for hours. One hour, maybe.

But check the website, I think the last section to Pilatus Kulm is being replaced and may be closed this winter.

The cable car is usually open during winter, but the zip-train closes

As mentioned above, you CANNOT get to Pilatus Kulm this winter. The cable car is being reconstructed and will stay closed until some time around Easter.

I think that some people won't believe it until they get there and find everything closed
