AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

Having seen several people recommending AirBnB, I thought I would look at booking through them for my trip to Zurich next month. I was surprised at the great choice.

If anyone has any experience of/recommendations for places within easy reach of Zurich HB to help me limit my choices that would be great

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

AirBnB charge a fee, which I discovered is not refundable.

Why not try Booking.com? They are similar, but more professional,

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

But the advantage of using AirBnB is you got the option to rent the whole flat, which is good or economically better when you are not staying alone (with family, or friends).
My last experience with AirBnB in Zurich was not so good. Many potential hosts whom I contacted did not reply immediately, and I ended up booking a hotel for my friends and their families who were coming for visiting at the time.

I have used booking.com bnb.ch and other sites without problems.

I was looking at AirBnB because I has seen several recommendations here and on Facebook. In general, the prices on AirBnB seem a little lower for comparable rooms. Whilst price is important, location and facilities are also a factor.

I am not fixed to any one site and appreciate all the comments so far

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

I used Airbnb in the past several times, and had nothing but great experiences. Much cheaper than hotel; and renting a flat is more comfortable than hotel room (for me).

Several places on AirBnB didn't reply. A couple put strange conditions like not returning after midnight. The one that I tried to book then said it was unavailable. The hotel that I have booked is only about £10/night extra for hotel facilities rather than a house share room

I recommend to all the contractors who come and work for me that they use AirBNB rather than hotels.

They have all reported happiness with location, price and standard.

I would recommend it.

Doesn't AirBnB have a review system that you can use to get to know the best places?

They do have reviews on the sites. Some only have a few though

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

Just wanted to add a recent airbnb experience here. I am booking a trip to NYC for this fall and hotels would add up quickly. As someone else noted, it was a bit challenging to get someone to accept my requests (I also tried Homeaway.com which I've used successfully in the past as well) which was a bit frustrting.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that you should still be careful with these forums -- yesterday someone tried to SCAM me to wire them the money directly to a bank account in the UK. I was suspicious anyway since the apartment was waaaay to nice for what they were charging and yes, it turned out to be too good to be true. As soon as I made offline contact (per the request on the actual booking page), the apartment link was suddenly down, they sent me emails from a fake airbnb email account, etc. I've reported it to airbnb (oddly, it's been almost 24 hours and they have not responded yet!)

I'm not saying this is the norm, but just follow the proper procedure of doing EVERYTHING through the airbnb website -- correspondence, payment, etc.

Oh, and I found a nice flat for the trip in the meantime. Hope it lives up to expectations!

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

I only had great experiences with airbnb. I have been staying in great houses, sometimes alone, sometimes with great hosts and guests. The only thing is I could not book really last minute (after a certain hour in the afternoon).

They are actually listing sites, not forums where you can find anything from a shared room to a castle. What is interesting, are the views and stereotypes of these listing sites from the renter side. It's all too easy to get scammed and some sites seem to be perceived better than others. However, you are dealing directly with individual owners so how can one site can possibly be better, as it's random owners you are contacting. If they don't reply, it's not the fault of the site. Booking.com for example is great for hotels and agencies but has a poor reputation with private property owners.

Most of these listing sites do little or nothing to verify the properties they advertise even exist. AirBnb certainly doesn't. Media reports of scams do not seem to bother them much but then they find a great solution of doing everything through their website to "protect you" They then can charge the owner a larger and larger commission (booking.com is up to 20%) and hide behind this security issue to ensure it all goes through their website. Owners are being squeezed, often into giving up renting completely because advertising costs can eat up all the profit. Yes, it is more secure but there are some sites which do actually verify the owner and property is real before listing. This eliminates all but the most determined scammer.

Re: AirBnB recommendations for Zurich

AirBnB over booking.com anyday!!

I have made about 12 bookings with airbnb in the last 5-6 months. Mostly in EU. I have had wonderful experience 90% of the time. Remaining 10% the people were just a pain.
But we were left with lovely, friendly, warm and welcoming people all over. They went out of their way for us to be comfortable in their homes and enjoy the city.

I feel the personal touch that one gets in airbnb is not there when booked through booking.com - my personal opinion though!

Airbnb is people renting part of their home or their apartment to travellers/visitors. Hence, all properties are furnished because no one travels with furniture

2k for 2.5 bedroom apt sounds normal if it is in Zurich city and big enough. Give us more details of the apt and we could tell you.

You look like you are looking for sublets, which might be found on other websites.
