Direct trains from Zurich for weekend trips 2-3 hours away?

Hi all,

I'm looking for direct train recommendations for weekend holiday trips that are around 2-3 hours away from Zurich.

I'm thinking Milan, Como, Liechtenstein, Bern, Geneva, ..?

I know there are lots of places that are in the mountains but I'm looking to do these weekend trips during the summer months and more sight seeing instead of snow sports... thanks in advance

Re: Direct trains from Zurich for weekend trips 2-3 hours away?

to add to your list for summer months

Romanshorn on Bodensee (Lake Constance) is approximately 1hour 10 minutes from Zurich

Check when they have their festival weekends in the summer.

Also around the corner from the train station is the Ferry Terminal, if you fancy the hourly departure approximately 45 minutes journey 9Euro each way or 11 CHF, no idea if cheaper day return to Friedrichshafen in Germany, if you fancied visiting the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen.

I am looking forward to reading the replies to your list, as I have not yet been to them and a number I would one day like to visit.

Thanks all for the responses so far...looking forward to more. Being originally based in London we've done many of the main Europe weekend city break trips so hope there are more nice villages to visit with good restaurants/food to check out!

Have you thought of going to the Zurich main station and seeing what is on offer at the travel office (SBB Reisebüro) ?

For Liechtenstein the train trip would take considerably longer than the time needed to see everything worth seeing.

All the mountain places are also great in the summer for hiking or sightseeing. The best landmarks in Switzerland are the mountains! Interlaken/Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen for example is a great trip!

Re: Direct trains from Zurich for weekend trips 2-3 hours away?

Glad to find this post...

We've been in ZH since Jan and have tried to start as we mean to go on; and have managed the following so far:
- St Moritz for White Turf (train - 3hrs)
- Bern for YB vs Everton game (train - 1hr)
- Milan for sightseeing, shopping and risotto alla milanese (train - 4hrs)
- Konstanz for sightseeing and shopping (train - 1.5hrs)

We've also the following booked:
- Graz to visit frends (flight - 1hr)
- Istanbul + Dubai for sightseeing and to visit family (flights - 2.5hrs, 4hrs)

..and these are on our agenda:
- Geneva as a comparable to ZH in CH (train - 3hrs)
- Monaco via Nice to see how the other half live! (flight - 1hr)
- Vienna + Budapest for sightseeing (overnight train - 9hrs + 1hr)
- Berlin to see what's left of the wall (flight - 1.5hrs)

The kicker here is that weekend tickets to all of these destinations are available at under CHF 200 return, if you're a little flexible with times.

If anyone has tips for getting tickets under CHF 100 return to other "must see" destinations, I'd love to hear them!
