zermatt during a snowstorm

I am living in Zurich for 3 months and want to do some traveling, so I booked (nonrefundable) train and hotel to go to Zermatt tomorrow afternoon, returning Saturday night. The weather report says it will snow continuously while I am there! I was hoping to do some snow hiking (I'm not a skier) but now I don't know what I'll do there!

Any suggestions of what to do in Zermatt while it's snowing? Will I still be able to do some snow hiking (I do have good boots and a warm coat). Snowshoeing? Anything else? I wish I picked a different weekend!

Thanks in advance!

You can still do everything that you would do when it is not snowing… except maybe get good views! Wrap up and go SNOW shoeing… the clue is in the name!!

What's wrong with a little snow? Yes, of course you'd be able to do winter walking, or better still to get some snowshoes. Just make sure you also take a decent hat and gloves, and goggles are useful if it's going to be windy (which doesn't seem to be the case).

Personally I think either of these activities are actually better when it's snowing some, as long as you're properly protected.

Re: zermatt during a snowstorm

Ooh, good, that's encouraging. I thought they groomed the trails for winter hiking, and that during a snowstorm I wouldn't be able to do that. I've never tried snowshoeing, but that looks as if it's probably the best thing to do. Any recommendations of where to rent and where to snowshoe?

All the snowshoe trails are on the piste map. You can look on the Zermatt website or pick one up when you arrive. Riffelberg/Gornergrat is a nice area to go.

You can hire snow shoes and poles at any major ski hire shop! You'll need some good hiking boots to wear with them!

Don't worry, you will find a happy balance on what you decide to do dependent on weather of course. I am sure you will absoutely love it as I did and I am hard to impress.

Re: zermatt during a snowstorm

Don't worry about a wild "snow storm" either. We've had a few flakes in Zermatt today... A few more are forecast for Friday evening/Saturday morning.... But not nearly enough to get anyone here excited

Sounds like you should just go for it. And follow it up with fondue or hot chocolate depending on the time of day. Bliss. Enjoy!

Hike to Findeln and treat yourself to a Vrony burger. You won't regret it, but your wallet might sting a bit...

Go to the Museum, to learn about Whymper and team first ascent of the Matterhorn 150 years ago (will be in July)- and how it led to the development of mountain climbing but also the massive rise in Alpine tourism in Switzerland.

Go to the cemetery next to the Church and learn how this village, like many others, is run by just 4 families, who intermarry. Also see the graves of those who lost their lives climbing in the area, often with ice picks and sculpted ropes on them.

Go to a spa in one of the many hotels.

Just walk around the village and drink up its unique atmosphere.

Find a bar for some mulled wine.

There is a new laser clay pigeon shooting range at Furi. The guns are real, but the guts have been removed and replaced with a laser. Completely safe, no noise or kick-back. Your shoot from a covered pavilion, so it's a good snow/rain day activity. It was a hoot!
