Nearby [2-3 hours from Zurich by train] cities for young adults to visit?

Hey everyone,
Some old friends of mine from America are coming through Central Europe and they wanted to know, what are some cities 2-3 hours away that would be fun for young people to visit this time of year? We were thinking of making either a day or weekend trip.

Certain traits we have in mind are places that are relatively easy on the wallet and have lots of cultural offerings in terms of music, museums, or art.

Thanks in advance.

2-3 hours from ZÜrich? By train or car or plane?

For a weekend I'd say; Paris, Venice, Amsterdam.

2-3 hours from Zurich by train I should have written before. No car sadly.... although I am definitely not ruling out the possibility of plane.

Well, in 2-3 hours on the train, you won't really get out of Switzerland.

So, Geneva, Bern, Basel.

A bit longer; 3 hrs Stuttgart, 4-5 hours Münich, 4-5 hours Milan, 4-5 hours Paris.

…. Or fly!

Outside Switzerland would be easier on the wallet.

Out of curiousity, is it easy to communicate with people in Strasbourg without French? I speak English and German only.

Virtually impossible. Germany is a much safer bet.

(The English holiday in France in their thousands every year and a really small percentage can actually speak the language well, if at all but they seem to manage).

I'm sure you'll manage for a day or a long weekend without French! After all they get thousands of tourists per year. It's a great place, enjoy!

Re: Nearby [2-3 hours from Zurich by train] cities for young adults to visit?

I was about to post a similar question as I've just moved to Zurich as a young adult (23) and looking to do some travelling as well!

As for Strasbourg, I lived there for 3 months last year and my French was maxed out at 'bonjour' and 'merci'. Given the international organisations there (EU, council of europe, etc.) and the high volume of tourism, you don't need French to survive out there (although, I would admit, don't expect the locals to speak in English to you). Beautiful city and definitely worth a trip; if you are there for more than a couple of days, I recommend doing the Route des Vins (cycle and drink lots of local wine) http://www.alsace-wine-route.com/en.

I went skiing in St Anton, Austria a few weekends ago and was amazed how close it was, only 2-3 hours from Zurich

Wonderful museums and art exhibitions as well in St. Anton. Plus, the musical offerings are second only to what Ischgl has to offer.

I wasn't very clear in my post. St. Anton meets none of your requirements. The other suggestions in this thread are good though.

Go to Münich. Only go to St Anton if you are going for the skiing/partying…. not culture.

Milan is 4 hours by train or 45 minutes by plane.

You and your friends can also rent a car and explore the lakes (Maggiore, Como, Garda, etc.)

For a day trip for a weekend trip, I would suggest Strasbourg and Colmar. These are 2 major cities in Alsace. There are lots of attractions in both of the 2 cities.
