Easter weekend destinations (starting from ZRH)?

Hello, my SO and I would like to get away for the Easter long weekend (Apr 3 to 6). We'll be starting in Zurich, ending in Neuchatel. We had originally thought of Austria (Innsbruck or Salzburg) but that would mean a lot of train travel on the last day to get back to Neuchatel especially from Salzburg (8 hours). So now I'm wondering about closer destinations, including Ticino (we've been to Locarno but not Lugano). We'd also consider places outside CH if there's not too much travel. Thanks for any advice!

I am so sorry, would love to help but do not understand your question? Are you living in Canada- so going back to Geneva airport from Neuchâtel?

From Neuchâtel you can get a shuttle train to the small French station of Frasne, where you can make a quick change for the TGV to Paris. Perhaps.
Depending on weather, roads to Tessin will be really crowded and Hôtels pre-booked.

Re: Easter weekend destinations (starting from ZRH)?

Hi Odile, sorry for not being more clear. I will be flying into Zurich from North America, but will be staying in CH for a while, so return plans to North America are not relevant here. We're just interested in some suggestions for how to spend the Easter long weekend, given that we are starting in Zurich and ending in Neuchatel from Apr 3 to 6. Salzburg sounds great, but as mentioned would require roughly 8 hours of travel on the last day, so I'm now wondering about closer destinations. Thanks.

How about ... Neuchâtel? As you say, Salzburg is very much beyond the other side of Switzerland- hence my suggestion of Paris- or Dijon/Beaune wine region, or Milan (Train to Lausanne and then direct) or even Florence or Pisa? Would you like to drive, fly or take the train?

Between Zurich and Neuchâtel you could stop in Luzern and maybe one of the Bernese resorts, Interlaken or Wengen?

Train or drive. We're already committed to the Thursday night in Zurich, so we would be leaving from there on Friday - which is why we are focusing on Austria or Ticino -- but open to suggestions.

Are you trying to save money? Or do you consider Switzerland not worth exploring?

Before coming here you can buy a rail travel pass for Switzerland, get a decent guide book and plan a rail holiday here.

Re: Easter weekend destinations (starting from ZRH)?

No, we're not trying to save money or avoid CH. My SO lives in Neuchatel so we've toured CH a fair amount already, which led us to think about traveling beyond. However, I see now that weather and being south or north of the Alps will be a major factor -- for example, the Innsbruck forecast is around 10 degrees C and rainy, compared to sunny and 20+ in Ticino. That may determine things, but we're still open to suggestions. We haven't done the Chur-Brig Glacier Express yet, so that's an example of something we would consider next weekend. Thanks again.

Adelboden? It's one of my favorite spots, but might be busy over the Easter Holidays.

Re: Easter weekend destinations (starting from ZRH)?

Bear in mind that many places both here and in Europe will probably be closed on Good Friday at least, maybe the Easter Monday too; it's not like the US/UK where the Easter holiday is just another weekend and everything's open as normal. Certainly few shops will be open, mostly near or in the railway stations. Shops will also more than likely be closed on the Sunday. Trains will also be running a reduced weekend rather than weekday service so that could affect your travel plans. Check any destination's website to see if/when they're actually open over the holiday.

+1 for Beaune/Bourgogne. Beautiful at Easter time. Book a wine tasting tour with this gal who is British but has lived in the area forever: http://www.burgundyonaplate.com/

The whole Burgundy region is very picturesque but Beaune takes the cake.

+1.
Burgundy is my favourite region in France. Maybe it's too late for booking but a few days in one of its castles is something worth all the money.

Re: Easter weekend destinations (starting from ZRH)?

Hi all, thanks for the recommendations. We went to Bourgogne in the fall, so we'd like to try somewhere different. One factor is the weather: the forecast is MUCH nicer south of the Alps, so Ticino has the advantage of nicer weather and less travel time. On the other hand, we've been to Locarno before, but never seen Austria or Bavaria. One option we considered was traveling from Zurich to Salzburg on Friday, then overnighting somewhere on the last night (Sunday) on the way back to Neuchatel, so we're not traveling 8 hours on Monday.

So I think the question is: south or north of the Alps? We'd be happy to stay in lesser-known places or explore some hidden gems, given our parameters. Thanks again.
