Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

I have not been that far deep into German-speaking Swiss territory before, with one whole day spare there before a (yodelling!) festival.

I am travelling by train and staying a couple of nights in Wattwil, so won't be having a car. Any suggestion on what to do and see? From their website, not much to do by the look of things! Should I bring my hiking boots or swim gear? Other town or city easily accessible to from Wattwil?

Head up the valley to Toggenburg for some decent hiking - although snow will still be at higher levels

Most helpful! Is the lack of comments linked to the lack of things to do and see in Wattwil? I'll bring a good book and a pack of cards, shall I?

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

I had heard of the name before but didn't really know anything about it then I saw this poster just now so it's got two mentions in one day although the second one for a more sombre reason.

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

Thanks everyone! I was a little concerned that in case of bad weather I would be stuck in my hotel for the whole day, with no Swiss German and clear agenda, I could be ending drifting aimlessly in the "Valleys"!! At least, I now have a couple of places.

How about for a good slice of "Kuchen" (with a decent cup of tea!)? Recommended tea rooms, restaurants? Do businesses have any website in Switzerland? When I think that back in Nottingham even your local tea room updates you on their choice of menu for the day!

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

Take the train to St.Gallen and visit the old town, cathedral and abbey library (a Unesco World Heritage Site).

Take a ride on the Appenzell railway to Appenzell.

Go for a drive in the local post buses. First take the bus from Wattwil to Hemberg Post. From Hemberg Post take the next bus to St. Peterszell Dorf. From St. Peterszell Dorf take the next Bus to Brunnadern Neckertal Bahnhof. From Ticke there take the train either back to Wattwil or onwards to St.Gallen. That will give you a very nice drive trough the backcountry. Buses run in sync and you can stop for lunch in any of the places along the way. Tickets in Eastern Switzerland are sold for a whole ticketing area and you can get a day pass for as many tariff zones as you require.

There is also a round the Canton of St.Gallen train (the S4 line) that stops in Wattwil. It travels around the entire Canton of St. Gallen and stops along the way in places such as St. Gallen, Buchs, Walenstadt, etc. Just get on and off as you like and in the end you will end up in Wattwil again. Very scenic !

Then of course there is also the Voralpen Express train. Get on the Voralpen Express in Wattwil and you will eventually end up in Lucerne. Another very scenic route. http://www.voralpen-express.ch/

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

If you walk to the left after the train station , you will come to a large bridge ,walk over it on the right side , cross the road at the lights you will see a nice coffee /cake backery shop. For a nice shopping trip head for Wil , a short train ride away.

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

I have only travelled through Wattwill en route to other places so can't add anything to the immediate area. I second the suggestions above. Toggenburg, Säntis, Appenzell or St Gallen

Re: Has anyone ever heard of Wattwil (SG)?

Well, thank you all for your contributions. In the end opted for Skt Gallen due to iffy weather (which turned out fine) and what a gorgeous little town. The Abbey library was like being on a Harry Potter set, incredible.

Wattwil...well, Wattwil is Wattwil, isn't it? But very friendly people, especially if you are a fellow yodeller, albeit living in Geneva (this well known planet at the other end of the universe!)
