Warning. New car hire rules for UK driving licence holders

Quote:
Motorists planning to hire a car either in the UK or abroad may need to show a code, which is valid only for 72 hours, from 8 June, as the paper counterpart of photocard driving licences is being replaced with a new online system that day.

At present, anyone who passed their driving test after 1998 has a photocard driving licence and a paper counterpart. The paper part of the licence shows any points you may have received for breaking the rules for example, being caught driving faster than the speed limit.

Drivers can already check their record on Gov.uk, but from 8 June points will be stored online and not added to the paper licence, rendering it useless.

Re: Warning. New car hire rules for UK driving licence holders

Since "foreign to the UK" hire car company staff probably aren't even aware of the paper counterpart, I doubt it's a real issue. Conversely when I hire a car in the UK, they don't make a call to the Swiss police to find out if I've got speeding convictions.

From my wanderings on UK forums, it seems this is a storm in a teacup raised by the RAC.

Slightly off topic, but how does this work with a Swiss driving license?

If you get some sort of penalty is it listed on the card or something, or do they have a similar system?

I've rented cars with my Swiss license and never needed a code or anything.

That could well be the case in general. Best to be aware in case you get the one who follows all the rules

More to the point, why should Sunny Rentals in Florida care whether or not you have speeding convictions? what use is that information to them?

The only important information is whether you are currently serving a driving ban in your home country, in which case you wouldn't have a licence to show in the first place.

It may be a requirement of their insurance (same as it is for a private driver).

I used to work in a garage, and we weren't allowed to provide courtesy cars to people with more than 3 points (one basic speeding offense) on their license.

You also need to have your National Insurance number with you,

There are no points on a Swiss license.

Some countries (like Italy) might choose to create you a point account for Italy using your swiss details, from which they will deduct point from infractions whilst driving there and eventually ban you. But this is unlikely to happen unless you really get stopped for a big one.
