Beach holiday for family

Anyone got any ideas for me?

I'm looking for a 1 week beach holiday for a family of 5, flying from Basel or Zurich, only up to about 2 hours flight. Not sure if we want a hotel or apartment complex. Beside the beach is a must, and a swimming pool. kids aged 8 to 12.

Thinking of Sicily, Sardinia, Spain...

We started by going to a travel agent, but first of all our search was too wide. Then she gave us a catalogue, but it was difficult to find anything for a family of five.

Then I started looking at the easyjet website, but again, it was just too wide. Anyone any ideas for anywhere to stay? The budget is flexible within reason!

Re: Beach holiday for family

A few years ago , we took Easyjet flights to Split in Croatia, hired a car from Holiday Autos ( better costs for all the punitive add ons) and took an apartment from Owners Abroad ( but before some of the bad news about these sites came out of e mails of owners being hacked)

Croatia is relatively lower cost than the others you mentioned : Beaches tend not to be sandy though

Re: Beach holiday for family

When my children were small, for a beach holiday, we chose either Northern Majorca or Lido de Jesolo in Italy. For grown ups if you are not beach people in Italy you are near to Verona and Venice for a bit of culture, and in Majorca lots of trips e.g Caves of Drach , Puerto Soller train and the beaches are fab.

Re: Beach holiday for family

just try trip advisor or a local travel/tourism office, and look for either a self-catering holiday apartment or hotel but email the bit hotels that look roughly in your price range and ask them specifically if they have family apartments or interconnected rooms.

I agree, finding accommodation for a family of 5 is harder than for 4 or less. We have had success with hotels.com in the past.

i am quite confident you can find something good, I would start with airfares and flight schedules to compare the main options fro Basel airport, then look at apartments within the geographic area.

I also use the google maps function to find 'apartment near...'...then cross-check what I find on tripadvisor for reviews, and then track down the website and book directly...

Re: Beach holiday for family

Ps. For apartments I usually look for 6+ beds. That usually gives better room configurations/options.

S.W. side of Lake Garda.
Sandy beach at Lazise, with theme park and waterpark nearby.

Re: Beach holiday for family

Teneriffe, Parque Santiago 4, Playa de las Americas, the large complex is right next to the beach, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

It will be very hot in summer, we went in early December.

I am sure if you go to a French travel agent you will get a good offer. There are apartments of all sizes, (we booked one for 4 and were allocated one for 8 people - very lucky)

At the time my children were 5 and 7 years old, and they still talk about that holiday 19 years later!

Re: Beach holiday for family

We used to do south of France with our kids when younger .great beaches ,family friendly activities and restaurants.
Have done Frejus and St Maxime plus also Cap'dAgde areas.
I would say the latter is less expensive and a bit quieter.

Used Provacances for a large villa and later owners direct with no problem.the last villa we had was 3 min walk from the beach.

If you want an all inclusive hotel type holiday though I would think Minorca is a good option too as not as busy as Majorca.

Greek Islands.
I second that.

My first Greek holiday was in Kefalonia which was absolutely beautiful.
The following year I went to Rhodes which was also nice but too big and busy for me.
The last four years I've been going to Zakynthos. I fell in love with Vasilikos and have been going every year. Amazing food, lovely beaches and warm people.

Check lastminute.ch as well as booking.ch for good deals. They have villas, apartments, hotel rooms, etc. on offer.

Make sure you rent a car for the week.

Re: Beach holiday for family

Thanks everyone for the great answers.

I particularly like Swisspea's suggestion of googling 'apartments near'. If found the travel agents less than helpful. We walked in with a smile and asked for something not too touristic anywhere on Mediterranean for family of five. Honestly, she sneered. She said we had to give a specific destination. And that everywhere was touristic (well, I suppose if you go into a travel agent..). Then I saw a page in a catalogue, and optimistically said, that looks nice. And she said, there's 600 rooms there, it's hardly intimate..

So then we took the catalogue, and true enough as she'd said, I went through the whole thing (Mediterranean resorts) and found only about 10 taht would actually accommodate a family of 5. So I decided to forget that and started googling. I think we're going to go with Sardinia. there are flights to Olbia, and then apartments within 50 miles. That's what I want. A short flight, a short way to the destination, an attractive setup for families beside the beach, a beautiful beach and some nice places to visit nearby

If you are still looking for a great place, I woul recommend Palma de Mallorca, a really beautiful Island within 1.5 hours flying distance from Zurich. - And with Airbnb you can find apartmens all over the Island and cars can be rent directly at the Airport.

Re: Beach holiday for family

+1 for Mallorca

But instead of Palma, I recommend the east coast of the Island for families. I took a package from TUI travel, and I was impressed by how well they have their game down for catering to families:
http://www.tui.ch/badeferien/

Very well run, mostly German families, some full pension. That beats the hell out of mostly English bar crawlers in Magaluf.

That would be in the range of CHF500-CHF600 per person including flight, hotel, lunch and dinner, unless you want to spend more.

You can get a rental car, like a convertible Golf for something like 30-40 Euros per day. You wouldn't run out of things to do in a week.
