How do you know how many zone tickets do you need?

I live in Zurich stadt. If I need to move from one location to other ( eg: Glanzenberg to oerlikon) , I usually buy tickets from ticket counter.
Now the problem is I have to figure out where each station is on the map and how many zones it covers. I can also type the source and target destination and find the number of zones.

Problem comes when I have a monthly pass for Glanzenberg to oerlikon and now I have to travel to Utliberg. I am not sure how many zone tickets I need to buy extra. So far I just type current location to "Uetliberg" and then count the number of zones, and then start again to buy the extra tickets. Is there any website which does all this online ? I have not used sbb app for buying tickets. Is it useful or should i manually calculater the number of zone tickets I need to buy each time ?

Most of the info on SBB or ZVV are not very helpful in this regards.

The best you can do is to either get a copy of the zone map: http://www.zvv.ch/zvv-assets/abos-un...zonen_2014.pdf
plus a copy of the system map:
http://www.zvv.ch/zvv-assets/fahrpla...n_zvv_2015.pdf

With some time you will know if you need a 1-2 Zone Anschlussbillet (Extension Ticket) or more. Note: if you have 8 Zones in total you can travel on the whole ZVV system.

Or enter your connection in the SBB timetable http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en
click on Fare/Buy

Unfortunately, it does not show you the exact ticket option for your itinerary. But every "available" one. If you enter your itinerary with a Via destination it is completely use less and you will end up with a huge fine. (Try with Zurich-Horgen via Rapperswil none of the shown tickets would have been valid.)

The ZVV website is even less helpful.

You can use the SBB app to suggest tickets - when you go through it tells you the zones you need to buy.

Unfortunately I don't think you can tell it zones you already have (154 & 110 I assume), and it doesn't allow you to buy tickets by zone so you couldn't do it manually either.

You have to find the last station where the train stops on the edge of your covered zone and buy a ticket from there to the destination.

I do this for travelling outside Zurich zones, but it's not very convenient.

You can always find your destination in the ticket machine, and it will calculate the ticket accordingly.

The problem with this is that the ticket machine will often offer you several options of tickets, not just one. Depending on which route you are taking between A and B, the fare can vary substantially. At Bucheggplatz (a junction in Zurich) if you enter "Baden" as a destination, the ticket machine will offer you six or eight different variations.

You're supposed to know via which places you're travelling. Of course, this is very different to do for people who don't know the full geography and all the routes, i.e. for most of the population. And anyway, most really don't care through which villages they travel if all they want to do is get from A to B.

Moreover, it doesn't just solve things to buy the most expensive ticket, just to try to be on the safe side, because it is STILL wrong (and you can be fined) if you take a different (even a cheaper) route.

Therefore, it is much safer to do what ASwissInTheUS and newtoswitz said, and get yourself a copy of the ZVV zone map. At least that way, you can be sure which zones you "own", and then buy supplementary tickets from the last stop in a zone you own, and then for all further zones.

Re: How do you know how many zone tickets do you need?

it's very easy, just enter your destination, sometimes there are more then one option i.e. so and so Bahnhof or so and so Post, select one it should not matter as they are always in the same zone, then if you select a return ticket you will get a 24 hour ticket for the zones you require i.e. 110, 112, 114. Of course if you travel after 00:30 then you will need to pay the additional night fare of 5.-

Re: How do you know how many zone tickets do you need?

How many zones are on your abo? If you have say, 4 on them (zones 110 and 120 count double), and need an extra 4, IIRC you can travel anywhere in the ZVV network and don't have to follow the zones you chose (if you so did), because the maximum number of zones you have to/can choose is 8. AFAIK there is a way to buy a "certain number of zones" ticket rather than a "from A to B" ticket. But the bloody ticket machines can be super complicated to maneuver.

Re: How do you know how many zone tickets do you need?

I always check on the ticket machine which has a map same as here :http://www.zvv.ch/zvv-assets/abos-un...zonen_2014.pdf

Calculate your number of zones from start to end.
Check how many zone extension you need and get your ticket at the machine.
If you destination is outside the region on the map then I usually go to the ticket counter .
