What to do in Bern on Sunday?

I am meeting up with family members (no kids) this Sunday in Bern and was looking for suggestions of what to do in the area for maybe 6 hours or so.

We will have a car so we can travel in the region, though strenuous mountain hikes are not for this crowd

Previous times (in other cities) we've visited museums, walked by a lake, had a nice long dinner. I know there are some museums in Bern but are any worth going to? Any walks? Restaurant suggestions? I'm hoping some people from the area might suggest their go to plans for a leisurely Sunday with visitors!

Thanks!

The bears, obviously, although the bear enclosure is currently being renovated, so you won't see it in its full glory. Nice walks around the old town and Münster, and along the Aare, all within a few hundred metres of the bears. Lunch in the Altes Tramdepot (need to book). Or walk up past the Bundeshaus and stop off at the Kleine Schanze for an al fresco drink or something to eat. Zytglogge is obligatory, and there's the Einsteinhaus just down the road - worth a quick look from outside.

Re: What to do in Bern on Sunday?

It's not Bern .... the far end of Brienzersee, to be exact - but if you have a car, it'll only be about 45mins. drive ..... Ballenberg - but good weather required.

I don't think they'll see the bears, either - didn't I read that they've moved them out - somewhere in the Jura?

Ballenberg is definitely worth a visit but make sure you've got comfortable shoes on.

The bears from the bear park are currently residing in the Juraparc at Vallorbe but there are still bears at the other place. It's quite a nice little animal park with a reasonable restaurant and walk along the river at the bottom of the hill.

Just had a quick look at the weather over the w/e - showery in the morning, possible becoming thundery in the afternoon.

Best keep to indoor activities ...... but how much museum time you can take as a group, remains to be seen.

Re: What to do in Bern on Sunday?

A couple of free suggestions aside from the cultural offer and more into the nature/relaxing side:

- Get a bike (for free) and ride around the city (or the river). You can even get a electric bike for an small fee (5CHF): You can go along the river, or around the city. Or both.

Info about the bikes: http://www.bernrollt.ch/

- Marzili Pool. Spend a few hours next to the river, with pools and nice lawn. Have lunch there! Easily accessible with the bike.
Location: http://tinyurl.com/marzilipoolbern
Info: http://www.bern.com/en/activites/adv...r-swim/marzili

You can combine this option with the ride with the bike. The pool is right next to the river Aare and right next to a path where you can ride your your bike along the river, and towards the airport across some farms/fields (pure flat route).

- If you are adventurous and the whether is good, you can even swim in the river. Jumping into the river from the camping Eichholz and letting your self flow up to the Marzili pool
Location: http://tinyurl.com/campingeichholz

- BBQ/Lunch in either Gurten. Ride up in the train is not free, although inexpensive and all worth it. Nice views, great place to relax and eat (either BBQ or bring your own food)

- BBQ/Lunch next to the Aere in Marzili or 500 meters from Marzili next to the
camping Eichholz .

Hope it helps!

Juan

Yes, the weather is a bit of a worry!
I'm at a loss for what else to do inside in a Sunday

Parties are traveling from geneva and Klosters, any kind of tourist thing in between? Like a chocolate factory tour?

Thanks for all the great ideas already, I have seen the outdoor museum, it was fantastic and I can definitely recommend it.

Probably nearer to Klosters than Geneva (as I'm sure you worked out Bern being roughly central), but how does Lucerne grab you?

Mainly indoor, when weather is crap.

Music?

There's a choral concert in the Heiliggeistkirche (near the station) at 11am. Works by J.S. Bach. It's free, too (pay to get out).

Re: What to do in Bern on Sunday?

If the weather is a bit dodgy you could travel to Thun and then take a cruise on the lake. You could stop off at Spiez for the castle or Beatus Caves among other places

If you go as far as Brienz, then it's only a small extra step to the Aareschlucht, which is pretty impressive in all weathers. And if you're going there, then you're practically at the Reichenbach Falls (Sherlock Holmes etc) and all sorts of other spectacular stuff.

Aareschlucht:

Re: What to do in Bern on Sunday?

The weather will be cloudy, but dry on Sunday,

http://www.meteocentrale.ch/de/europ...23/#2015-06-07

You could walk from Bern station through the old city to the Paul Klee museum, http://www.zpk.org/

You could stop at the restaurant at the Rose Garden for a drink and take in the view of Bern http://www.rosengarten.be/

http://map.search.ch/Restaurant-Rose...uerstalden-31b

Your route follows the number 12 bus route most of the way. You could take the bus going there, or going back to the station.

Re: What to do in Bern on Sunday?

Well.... I'm embarrassed to admit, but family meeting was canceled last minute due to sore back and inability to travel

However, the suggestions are AMAZING. I knew a few of them, but there are a lot of surprises. Screw the family, I'm coming to Bern on my own!!
