Anyone took the ferry from Crete to Santorini

Hi,
Any experiences about ferry the travel from Crete to Santorini in Greece?

We would like to take the ferry to Santorini from Crete and come back the same day in the evening. We would like to take the rental car with us.

Thanks

Hi,
I advise against returning the same day. If you take into account the time you need to be in advance at the port, the time you will have to wait for the likely delay of the ferry (it is very common) and the trip itself you spend half day or more just for that. Above that Santorini is not an island that you can visit in few hours and also the car is not the best vehicle to drive there (unless you go in low season).

We did a Ferry from crete to Santorini in 2009 and returned the same day back.

I would however sugegst to spend more time in Santorini and half day to one day is not enough to see enough of Santorini.

Re: Anyone took the ferry from Crete to Santorini

It is more than 10 years since I did the day trip from Heraklion

Because of poor communication on the ferry I was too late to get off 1st stop. The other stop, one has the choice of going up steep cliff by donkey, but most took, forget the name, like ski lift train. No cars were on that route & do not believe access that side for one
Only had a few hours there to walk around that town at the top and stop for lunch.
The ferry itself was awful, many hours and food awful, un eatable. The lady next to me announced her scrambled eggs were off, I had wondered what was wrong with her nose as the smell told me they were rotten. Think I just had a bit of bread.

I would not do that day trip again. If you would like to visit, would strongly suggest at least an overnight stay or two.

I believe but not sure, the first stop could be part of a tour of the island, visiting sites & perhaps ending up at the 2nd port for return home, or perhaps some spent the night there and returned next day or night!

Obviously everything will be more expensive on Santorini compared to Crete, as beleived most things have to be imported to Santorini as it is volcanic island.

Hopefully one day will make it back to spend some days there. Certainly a very pretty island.

We took a ferry 2 years back. However, like others would suggest that you stay over for at least one night as you won't be able to do justice with the place in half day...btw, driving around should not be much of an issue..

We did that in 2006, so my info may be out of date. I agree that I'd give Santorini more time, but that's not the question you asked, and if that's all you have, then so be it. Regardless, I would definitely recommend heading to Oia rather than just see Thira/Fira. You can make your way all the way down to the water and then hire a donkey to take you back up or just wander the streets/paths.

Re: Anyone took the ferry from Crete to Santorini

Thanks all for your suggestions...
We had an awesome trip to Santorini with ferry, stayed there a night which is very much worth it for Santorini. We went to several beaches, spent sometime near the sunset point.
Would like to visit Santorini again. We loved it.
Amazing place. Driving was perfectly fine.
