55 x 35 x 20 = F[ly]-you IATA [new hand luggage size limit recommendations]

IATA plans to introduce a industry wide hand luggage size.
Not big according to budget airlines standards, just 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm

Telegraph says smallest size is 19 cm others and IATA write 20 cm.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/tr...assengers.html

Nice now I have to get a new duffle back bag which fits into this spec as my old Samsonite will no longer be allowed.

Found this company who specializes in max allowed hand luggage size bags: http://cabinmax.com/

IATA Press release: http://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/Pag...-06-09-02.aspx

For the moment it's just a recommendation, but you can be sure many airlines will adopt it quickly, as it means more revenue from checked bags.

Groan if you want but I like this. I am so tired of having flights delayed every week because people seem to think that hand luggage means anything they can just barely schlepp around? Common occurring feature is someone looking around for someone to get the overweight bag into the locker as (she mainly) that person cannot even lift it.....

I agree though that this is just a way to make more money.

While it may be a way to create more money, I'd personally be happy if the size limits were reduced to 40x25x15 and a limit of not more than 8 kilos for hand baggage. I can last a week easily with just that, and just buy things locally as and when I need them.

Seriously, if you need more than that then pay up and stick it in the hold. And even more seriously you do not need to bring your entire bloody house with you when you travel by air.

Thought I'd check out what the sizes mean vs. the luggage I have.

Although while by Rimowa business trolley will fit, my "IATA" (sic) cabin trolley won't as it is 5 cm too tall... which is a pain as for business travel beyond 2 days as I need the larger one.

TBH for me, the hold isn't about cost, it is about 1) getting there with your luggage and 2) it being in one piece... When travelling on business, arriving without your gear isn't an option.

With approx 200 flights a year for the last umpteen years, I "lost" my luggage 14 times only. 7 times of that in Heathrow by the way.....

I (even as a female) have a basic set of stuff that fits into that size of suitcase and as slaphead said, the rest I can buy

Counter productive. I like to fly with only carry on, without checkng in luggage, so I can zip out after landing. But if compelled to check in luggage, I would add to foot traffic and their baggage handling overhead. They should have larger carry on limits, and encourage it. Not smaller, and discourage it.

It always makes me wonder how important you really are in a corporation if they can allow you to waste time flying 200 times per year.

Being perfectly honest, a flight now is around 4 hours of wasted time minimum if you count the time from office/home to airport, approx 1 hour at airport for customs, security etc before take off, 1 hour flight and then through the airport to a taxi/train to arrive at your final destination.

it's just two trips a week. maybe one for commuting and one for a weekly site visit.

(or just one trip a week with a change of plane)

Re: 55 x 35 x 20 = F[ly]-you IATA [new hand luggage size limit recommendations]

The joy of flying!!

Having boarded early I got to my seat and placed my small hand luggage in the overhead bin with my jacket. The seats gradually filled up with people putting their luggage in - and then near the end this little man came along with a laptop bag, duty free bag and a suitcase.

to me: "Could you move your bag?"
to him: "Could you check your luggage in?"

An attendent arrived and took his case - and unable to find a place to put it - checked it into the hold.

I have no problems with people bringing on "small" cases - but I have seen people with heavy winter coat, large laptop bag, handbag, suitcase and duty free bag!!

The less crap people bring into the cabin, the better. If you're gone for a week, just check your bag and give up the extra 20 minutes waiting for your luggage.

Use a backpack and stick it under the middle seat. No need to deal with the overhead storage.

Re: 55 x 35 x 20 = F[ly]-you IATA [new hand luggage size limit recommendations]

It is not that it will be smaller.
- But that I like my old bag.
- I will need and have to find a new one.
- It perfectly fitted so well and can hold a shit load of various stuff.
- So much actually that not the size but the weight was the issue.
- It was checked-in many times as it acted as a second suitcase if needed.
- And had never been an issues even following my usual routine: Being the last to board.
- Because it is squishy and light weight.
- Acts a backpack which makes running to the curb so easy.

But in the end, it has also the perfect size for road travel with a small Toyota Yaris. The nice old P1 TS.

I don't so much have a problem with strict limits as I have a problem with them not being applied equally across the board.

I've been on flights where I was asked to check my bag into the hold because there wasn't space, even though others were stowing far larger items stowed in the overhead lockers. My mistake was being towards the end of the boarding queue.
