Staying in Zürich

Hi there,

I did use to be a member when I lived in Switzerland about 5 years ago but couldn't remember my login! My new husband wants to take me for a trip for my birthday so I can show him my old haunts etc. Can anyone recommend a nice `but affordable hotel or bed and breakfast in or near Zürich? Or elsewhere if you know somewhere amazing, but got to be accessible easily by public transport (which most places are!).

We have looked on all the obvious websites but you often can't find the best ones online.

Thanks in advance!

J

Re: Staying in Zürich

What is "affordable"?
And how do you define "near"?

Re: Staying in Zürich

Sorry that was a bit of a vague request! Affordable, preferably under £500 or £600 for the two of us for 4 nights.

Distance-wise I'm not too fussed as long as it's accessible by transport. Within an hour/hour and a half from airport ideally. The closer the better but I'd rather be somewhere nicer that's further away, if that makes any sense.

and

http://www.hotelseefeld.ch/

would be my first picks for central Zurich hotels <= 200CHF per night, but not "amazing" by a long shot.

Re: Staying in Zürich

In the village next to where I live, there is this hotel:
http://www.hotel-oktogon.ch/english/

Reviews at various sites are OK, it seems to be clean (and it's relatively new). It's more oriented towards business-travelers, but I assume you just want to sleep there and not spend your day inside the hotel.
It takes a bit over 20 minutes to Zurich main station and 40-45 minutes to the airport from there (train-station is across the road).

There's a relatively big Coop about 400m from it.

On Friday and Saturday, you can catch the night-trains from the main-station which also stop there (SN9), every our.

I think it would come to about 300 UKP - depending on the date, your choice of room etc (I just chose a random date at the end of next month).

Re: Staying in Zürich

I stayed at the Hotel St Georges in Zurich a few months ago. It should be within your budget

Re: Staying in Zürich

Some recent guests of mine stayed at the Hotel Mercure near Albisriederplatz.

I heard no negative noises about the place. Plus it is a stone's throw from public transport.

HTH.

Re: Staying in Zürich

Do you need room service and amenities? If not, there are Air BnB rentals and turnkey apartments, since you already know the place. Those turn-key apartments are easy. You get a code, you punch it in at the door, a key to the apartment falls out. Less than CHF per night.

Re: Staying in Zürich

TA is a good source of info - however some local knowledge is often useful also. And I am happy to share experiences and recommendations instead of just blindly telling people to go Google for it - which represents about 70% of EF replies.
