Sounds amazing. Was this a full-day (morning and afternoon) excursion, starting and ending in Luzern?
It's most of a day but the actual transport section is about three hours so you could probably do it in four or five (allowing time to get between connections).

There are various ways of doing it but we did the following:
  • Start: Luzern railway station.
  • Bus to Kriens.
  • Gondola/Cable car to the top of Pilatus (we had lunch there).
  • Cog railway down to Alnachstad.
  • Boat back to Luzern.
  • Finish: : Luzern railway station.

Here's the map:

How about a trip onto the hills behind Neuchatel. The photo is from the Chasseral. There is a bus service from the train station in La Neuveville, upto the Chasseral (1600mts). The summit is quite flat and also has a hotel. From here you have a panorama over the Alps, Seeland and France.
Chaumont, which is directly above Neuchatel, is also a nice half day trip.

Re: Good trips for retired couple (health problem)

+1 for Gruyere - we took my (then) 92 year old grandmother there using public transportation from Fribourg two years ago, and she loved it.

The bus stop is very close to the touristy area, so the walk up wasn't a problem. She took her time, and rested quite a bit, and even managed to visit the entire castle. Her logic was that she probably wouldn't get to go back, so she should make the most of it on the day we were there!!

However, she is French, not American, and is used to walking everywhere she goes, so that might make a difference.
