Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

My 5 year old is suffering from little brother jealousy because his big sis is allowed to do so much more. So I was thinking of taking him for a mom/kid day trip somewhere but I am drawing a blank on ideas.

We will be leaving from Zurich HB and it can't be too far (this is flexible but 3 hours on a train each way would be too far). The only thing I could think of is Verkehrshaus but my oldest would be extremely pissed if I took my youngest and not her. (long story)

Does anyone have an idea for a fun time with an active 5 year old?

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

Around zurich... Zoo...palaentology museum....rooftop spa at hurlimann areal....movies.....bird house near burkliplatz....greenhouses at the stadt gartnerei (has birds and fish and turtles)....boat ride down the limmat....playground at the chinese gardens...tram ride to nowhere....outdoor garden at Altstetten...park at the gemeinschaftzentrum at Riesbach..or at wollishofen...train ride to the top of the Uetliberg where there is a great kids playground.... Take your scooter and go to the skate park at sihlicty...

To be honest, I can't see why you need to go further than Zurich with a 5 year old...there is plenty to do that is active and interesting, you can take a picnic or grab food from anywhere... Even the rooftop migros restaurant near Lowenplatz has a kids playground...although it's been recently renovated so not sure what it's like now...

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

Have you tried Trip Advisor? .... It returns 268 attractions for Kanton Zurich - although many would be boring or non-applicable for a small boy.

One thing that might rock his boat, though, could be the Air Force Centre at Dubendorf (Aviation Flab Museum):

http://www.airforcecenter.ch/index.php?id=1&L=1

I can't comment, personally, as I've never visited.

ETA: It appears to be only open during afternoons.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

I'm with swisspea on this one. It depends a bit on the child though. Some 5 year olds love long trains trips. Others only want to get where they are going. One granddaughter sat still, fascinated, through Swan Lake at the age of five, another other one wouldn't, at the same age, have sat still for the first three bars of the Overture.

Places with interesting things (which move!) to look at plus somewhere to climb up, jump down, swing round and, ideally, the possibilty of getting wet, seem to score well with most children.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

I agree with others and wouldn't venture out too much of Zurich. He just wants to spend some time with you. What you do will not depend that much.

Depending on the child a nice idea might be the Technorama in Winterthur. Winterthur can be reached within 20 minutes with the S12 or fast Trains and there is a bus from the main station to the museum. If your 5 year old likes technic, things that move or blink and the he can touch he will have a field day! I am waiting to take my big one there http://www.technorama.ch/en/

Another idea also close to Zurich is the Kindercity in Volketswil. http://www.kindercity.ch/en/home.html Also Close from Zurich and perfect for that age.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

I was quite surprised how much our (just turned) 6 year old enjoyed Technorama. Lots of things to look at and TOUCH! Under 6 year olds are free!

If you go, don't expect to see more than about 1/10 unless you want to drag the child from one area to the next. Ours adored the wooden gadgets where balls are raised and then fall downwards through various 'shutes' making various degress of sound. Some of them are 'man powered' and it take quite a bit of energy and staying power to turn/pull/push the levers to get the balls to the starting point. Ours enjoyed it and I could just let them wear themselves out.

Our packed lunch eaten outside was fun and quite relaxing. A vital element for grandparents. The 'upside down yo-yo' in the park was also a hit with our eight year old and it was interesting to see the older children having quite a bit of difficulty getting the timing right.

Well worth a visit. Try to avoid a wet day when German schools, Zürich schools and Canton Schwyz schools are all on holiday! Even on a 'good' day, you rung the risk of coach loads of youngsters and school classes from all over on their day trip but at least they are 'supervised'.

Have fun.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

Not a day trip from where you live, but a great outing. Have you tried Trampolino? I took my 2 grandchildren aged 4 & 3 there when they were visiting and we had so much fun. Not sure who enjoyed it the most as it was their parents who asked if we could go back again! Lots of other kids there to play with and something you can have fun doing together.

Another vote for Technorama. Plenty to keep anyone occupied, from small children to adults. I have been there twice on my own

Another vote for technorama, and they have a lunch room too so you can grab something to eat with your son.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

The Troll asks to go to the dinosaur museum in Aathal almost every week. It's close to Juckerfarm, so you can combine a visit to the museum with lunch at the farm. We've had to set a limit to once every 3 months or when we have guests.

Otherwise we have an annual pass at Verkehrshaus, and we've been seen repeatedly at the zoo until he turned 6. Not so much anymore.

He loved Technorama, but we found it a bit noisy for our adult taste.

For a nature based outing a bit further away, Braunwald, Flumserberg and Atzmännig are fun with kids. And according to the Troll's dad, so was the zoo at Arth Goldau.

Trollefar and the Troll also liked the Museum of Natural History in Basel. And we've done a very successful day trip to Bellinzona where we role-played knights' scenarios in the fortresses.

The Rapperswill on the other hand wasn't as popular with us.

Re: Day trip ideas with my 5 year old

You can also try Engelberg-Brunni !

It has got tickle trail at top, can see Globi ! My 5 year didn't want to come back. You can combine it with Adventure playground near by ! I was amused how simple raft can keep busy my lil for sooo long.

Rest in such nice weather, outdoor swimming pools can be fun too !
